The lack of OC facilities is considered a weakness in terms of financial commitment to excellence. This is not a new view of Memphis but one that has followed our university since Crump Stadium for FB & then-Ellis Auditorium for big basketball games. But it has been perpetuated in that Memphis has continued to rely upon municipal facilities, notwithstanding the quality of FExF and mostly directed at the Liberty Bowl due to its age without major upgrade, i.e., updated locker rooms, modern press facilities & most important - a lack of easily accessible modern suites. And this with the underlying foundational understanding that Memphis still plays in municipal, off-campus facilities. Whether the assessment is fair, the Memphis situation is certainly different than the vast majority of P-5 major sports experiences & one used routinely to be critical of our university & its commitment to FB & BB.
But I think our situation is fairly common for universities in large metropolitan areas. USC, UCLA, Miami and others play in municipal stadiums. It is somewhat wasteful to have multiple stadiums in a city when such stadiums get little use. And the fact that we were willing to partner with the City on the Pyramid which then gave way to the FEF shouldnt be held against us. When we really need to, we will build our own.
I do think we should build a ring of suites on each side of the LB. i dont see why you could work them in, maybe right below he upper portals. One of you architects get on it.

I have no idea if we are getting in or even in the mix. But I assure you, if we start seeing Texas and OU come in here for conference games, facilities will not be an issue. We will have hard sellouts constantly and plenty of money to do whatever needs to be done.

Anyway, this was a pretty good article.
I've heard it a couple of times over the years, pretty sure one of the mentions was by George L. The context, from what I remember, was from back in the day (60s/early 70s) when Memphis was considered a regional leader in facilities and doing really well in football - the fact that it was a major southern city, it could compete (and then some) with many SEC schools for recruits (i.e. why go to a small college town as opposed to a city with lots to offer, all else being equal). City leadership was chasing the dream of the NFL, though, and we've bounced around in mid-major leagues and independence for the next 40 years. Schools like Memphis, Cinci, Louisville can offer a different lifestyle to recruits than what many small-town, state schools can offer. I believe the success that Louisville has experienced over the past 10 years can and will be duplicated by the U of M once we make it to the Big12.

Yep. It's been said that the Big12 regrets not taking Louisville. Well, they can "fix" that by taking us - large metro, destination location (Memphis is a perfect weekend trip for other fan bases) in the middle of fertile SEC recruiting territory. We would excel with P5 $s/exposure and quickly become a major conference player.

In all seriousness, when I think of what could be, the potential of Memphis football, if we were to get into a P5 conference and all that it entails, I think big. As in national rankings, big-time bowl games, prime-time exposure, etc. The support is here, always has been, just needed something to actually support. The last two years have proven that. I hope the B12 goes ahead and expands, as I believe we're in their top 2. If they defer, we have to just keep doing what we've been doing these last few years. I believe that expansion is coming, sooner or later, and we're in prime position to be snatched up. Here's to it coming sooner!
The Bear also once said that with our facilities he'd win the NC every year. At one time we had investment into the program but allowed neglect and time to erode what built up then. We are on the right path back and we will be a great program again.

yeah I've heard that quote mentioned before too but kinda makes me wonder when he said it since he never coached a game against memphis in memphis

Yeah, I mean who ever heard of an school unknown in football being a giant, I mean, you would have to like recruit allot of inner city kids, get coaches like Schnellenberger, Johnson, and Ericson to build something like that, Oh wait never mind

Agree there are examples & you have named the ones I know but they are far from common & certainly not the profile of any P-5 schools aside from the ones you have named - and all of those have won a nat'l championship (another qualification Memphis lacks). And playing in municipal facilities is not the profile of any of the B12 schools that will be doing the choosing. Not talking about fairness or logic, just the perception when media or decisionmakers consider Memphis, they consider facilities are weak - as stated in the article.

Not sure what Dodd meant with either of his comments. We are every bit of a brand as UCF, Houston, USF or Colorado State.

I agree - not only will our alumni have more pride, the general population will be attracted to "big-time football".

Maybe he meant in regards to the last decade or two in football, i.e. the case of UCF, the Knights either played for or won a conf title in 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014....(including a BCS Bowl Win over Big 12 Champ), while ever since Memphis rejoined conf football back in 1996, the Tigers have a total of just 1 shared conf title which obviously occurred last year.
Since 2005, Houston either won or played for Conf Titles in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015.
USF was given a gift of big boy football (Big East) but they never really did anything with it...i.e. best conf season was a 4-3 record.
