Prophetic movie quote
From nearly 85 years ago, the Marx Brothers had it right. This is from "Horse Feathers" in 1932.
Wagstaff: This college is a failure. The trouble is, we're neglecting football for education.
The Professors: [in unison] Exactly, the professor is right.
Wagstaff: Oh, I'm right, am I? Well, I'm not right. I'm wrong. I just said that to test ya. Now I know where I'm at. I'm dealing with a couple of snakes. What I meant to say was that there's too much football and not enough education.
The Professors: That's what I think.
Wagstaff: Oh, you do, do you? Well, you're wrong again. If there was a snake, you'd apologize. Where would this college be without football? Have we got a stadium?
The Professors: Yes.
Wagstaff: Have we got a college?
The Professors: Yes.
Wagstaff: Well, we can't support both. Tomorrow we start tearing down the college.
The Professors: But Professor. Where will the students sleep?
Wagstaff: Where they always sleep. In the classroom.
To many universities have fallen into this category. But this movie is filled with quotes that ring true today.
Frank: Dad, this college has had a new president every year since 1888.
Professor Wagstaff: Yeah.
Frank: And that's the year we won our last football game. Now, I like education as well as the next fellow.
Professor Wagstaff: Well, move over and I'll talk to the next fellow.
Frank: But a college needs something else besides education. And what this college needs is a good football team and you can't have a good football team unless you have good football players.
Professor Wagstaff: My boy... I think you've got something there.

Part of that has been my signature for more than a year.

Well what do you know...complaints about students sleeping in class didn't start with Gen X or the millennials...it goes much farther back.

They have literally been saying this forever.
" They only care about frivolous things. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly impatient of restraint." -Hesoid, history's first economist between 750-650 B.C
