Whoa. I left at T9 when Schragger threw #4. Didn't realize there were three more afterward.

I left after the grand slam in the 8th.

I can't believe we allowed 15 runs in 8th and 9th.

Forget an at large bid unless we get to the finals at USM. This game is like the nail in Raynor's coffin in the CUSA tourney at UH....just a horrific visible beat down. There is no way to say this team and program is anywhere close to the team and program up to Rendon's final year.

I'll wager this will be on the front page of the sports section when the Chronicle hits my driveway in the morning.

RE: Rice vs.Houston (Silver Club Finale)
Prediction update:

Predictions for the remainder of the year

(1) Lose the series vs. FAU to get eliminate from the regular season title race - THANK GOD FOR RAIN DELAYS; STILL WOULD TAKE A MIRACLE TO WIN CONFERENCE
(2) Get blown out at Constellation next week; the Coogs keep the glove - CHECK
(3) Lose on the road at LaTech next week to drop to the 4 seed in the CUSA tourney
(4) Lack of pitching depth catches up at CUSA tourney, ending the streak
(5) Early exit from regionals

This team is who we thought it was at the beginning of the year. Every weekend series except one against top flight competition, they've lost and/or been embarrassed. Padding the record against the dregs of CUSA doesn't change that.

-----

Time for a change.

Was it really "successful" when Rice ended up down by 6 in the late innings? That is why I hate sac bunting early in the game. Wastes an out when you do not have any idea what kind of game it will be.

Or down 18? We did score 2 runs that inning!

In pro ball on average stats show there is one case where it makes sense to bunt: runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs..it increases the chance very slightly to get at least 1 run...although expected runs is less even then. So the perfect situation to do it is in bottom of the 9th when tied. Also probably do it in 8th or top 9th and when down a run but that is less of clear decision. Note when just a man on 1st, it reduces your chance to even score one run.

Even given the difference between pro and college and the fact the specific situation is very important (batter's bunting and hitting ability, pitcher's ability, who is coming up next, defense quality) I am positive that we bunt far too often. I think it ends up costing us runs and wins.

Maybe if we had swung away that inning instead of bunting we would have gotten 20 instead of 2 and the game could have gone to extras.

Perhaps we had a bet for over/under successful bunts. Disclosure:in Vegas thinking in Vegas terms.

Pretty sure we're going to be in the tournament. That's not a question. Our hosting chances are slim to none at this point, however. Will agree that Karlgaard has a lot of thinking to do over the summertime, barring a miraculous trip to Omaha by this squad. This program has been stagnant for the better part of a decade at this point, and there is no sign it's going to get better unless changes are made; whatever those changes may be is up to Karlgaard to figure out. Whatever we've been doing isn't working anymore, so Karlgaard needs to work to do whatever it takes to get the team back to being a consistent Omaha and national title contender. Maybe those in charge are just fine with the program the way it currently is, but given the program's stature amongst Rice athletics, it has to be held to a higher standard.

RPI is dropping pretty quickly. CUSA is probably not a 4 bid league. A 4th place finish, poor closing stretch, early exit from conference tourney, and only 1 series win over postseason team will keep Rice out.

When you surrender 24 runs it is a total breakdown. Berating players and might have worked in the old days but in today's world is counter productive. None of these players walked or hit that many batters in High School so you have to ask yourself are the mind games being played at Rice really working? Telling players they are soft or suck doesn't build confidence and is counter productive. People perform better whether at work or in athletics when operating in a positive environment. You reap what you sow.

Oh look at this. Howlomaha thinks two years of junior college baseball experience qualifies him to be a baseball psychologist and know more than somebody in the college baseball hall of fame.

Seriously, pal, learn to gather yourself and calm down before posting absolute trash on a message board.

Midweek games mean next to nothing. Just ugly for us who are used to smacking UH around. If we win 2/3 this weekend in Ruston we won't drop at all in any of the polls.

Yes, the Daily Cougar was spot on as always. Front of the sports section with two articles about our favorite high school. Guess I must overlooked it those front page articles when we had a multi year sweep winning streak over those clowns in BB or six months after we won the FB title in 2013. Here's hoping that Stoops runs it up on them in September so the back to national prominence nonsense can be put to rest.

RE: Rice vs.Houston (Silver Club Finale)
As disappointed as we all are with last night's game, a little perspective might be in order. From my perspective, there were actually two games...the first 6.2 innings and the last seven outs. Through 6.2 innings the score was tied at 6-6, Rice had more hits and played well on defense. We missed some scoring chances but UH was trying also. The last seven outs we had inexperienced pitchers and gave up 16 runs.

No doubt we have to play better, capitalize on scoring opportunities and have the relief pitching return to earlier season form. We can still have a long run in post-season and all is not lost. Although we probably have lost any chance to host a regional, the season is not over.

Just my perspective.
