OT-Sports Nets Look to Monetize Out-of-Home Viewers
One way to circumvent cord cutting.

Quote:The preliminary data suggests that over the course of a given week, between 30% and 40% of ESPN viewers are accessing the network's feed from an out-of-home location. Bars and restaurants are the most popular venues outside the home, accounting for 30% of ESPN's out-of-home composition, while the gym (11%), the office (8%) and hotel rooms (7%) also contribute to the mix.

How exactly will this make them money though?

So they are going to charge more for the ads at sports bars? Or are they going to show more ads?

You are going to pay someone somewhere.

If you don't pay the cable company you will pay the content provider... someone always gets paid.

Plus adding new target markets.

Quote:"The lift we're seeing is actually better than we've expected," Mr. Bulgrin said. "It's a high quality audience -- slightly younger, a bit more female-skewing, and also a bit more multicultural. Out-of-home extends our reach to a number of very attractive segments."

Actually, they could probably up the rate at sports bars. Since they will be on a business plan via cable or satellite, ESPN could up their rate for cable/satellite provider which will in turn pass those rate to the business.
Could be a set rate of by capacity of the business so that those who can only have say 40 people don't have the same rate as the larger ones with 200 (i.e. Buffalo Wild Wings...etc).

That could work.

And then Buffalo Wild Wings could pass along their additional cost to all of their customers via higher menu prices. The customer ultimately pays one way or another.
