RE: Gary Johnson's Rumored VP Pick
Is he the presumptive nominee? Austin Petersen has been making the rounds on a few podcasts that I listen to, and he seems much more palatable. He also owned Johnson on gun rights in their last debate.

Would be a relatively formidable third party ticket.

Johnson pretty much has it in the bag.
Peterson seems decent, more a "purist" libertarian I suppose, and probably has his sights more focused on 2020/24.

Weld would be equally a good choice for the Republicans. He has a one hell of strong resume.

Ask Ralph Nader circa 2000.
If it's a close race, Hillary and Trump will care a lot, as even a 3-4% pull from a third party might have all the impact it needs.

Trying to see how Weld is considered a Libertarian. As Governor of Mass he raised taxes, increased government regulation, expanded Medicare, supported the assault weapons ban, and tried to limit the number of handguns someone could own. In these parts we consider those basic tenants of the dim party, not the party of potheads and anarchy.

RE: Gary Johnson's Rumored VP Pick
Wonder which way the LP will go, as party activists will ultimately decide who gets the nod. And that's why Johnson can't get too comfortable.
Johnson and Weld are by no means "purist" libertarians, but have a legit shot of actually making a decent impact in this election, even in a loss.
Then again, you might have some Ayn Rand disciple/black helicopter types who see Johnson as a commie and will select someone else on principle, who will then give the LP their usual 0.5%.
The LP bypassed the frontrunner a few elections ago.
Strange as it sounds, too much MSM love for Johnson might actually backfire on him.

They dont know what the hell they stand for. As much as Id like a 3rd party the LP has serious identity / inconsistency issues.

I've said before I have tried multiple times to get behind the LP but every time they just about have me convinced they go way out there not even in left field but into the cemetery out beyond the parking lot behind the left field bleachers with something and it turns into a great big "Nope" moment. Like when one of the guys who works with my wife and is big in the LP here in SC told me to look into Gary Johnson because he thought I would like him for President. I checked it out and was starting to get sucked in then I saw how he's soft on crime, soft on immigration, soft on defense and soft on drugs. Once again....NOPE.

The drugs don't bother me, but the immigration does. I wish the LP would change their stance on immigration. The government overreaches everywhere else, but this is one of the few areas they have a constitutional role and they aren't performing. Advantage Trump there. Advantage Johnson in most other areas.

What you may consider "soft", another would consider reforming the Drug War and a less interventionist policy as "sensible."

Although this could be applied to any party. Trump and Hillary could switch sides on some issues. She's hawkish, he yearns for an economic trade war, etc. Even Sanders, a true-blue leftist, is too "right" on gun rights for much of his BernieBot camp.
I don't consider myself libertarian in the true sense of the word, I probably accept a little too much government to ever "fit" that party. But I really dislike the GOP and Dem nominees this election cycle, even more so than usual, and the LP has the most formidable ticket and solid resumes they've ever offered (if the party nominates them, of course).
