Is UNA still considering the move to D1? They seem like a perfect fit for the OVC.

The A-Sun has said it would only expand with the right teams. They don't want to split the basketball shares anymore than they have to.

I think we are more likely to see conferences contract / merge than to invite numerous DII schools just to fluff up enrollment.

But, they do need to expand because they don't want to be spread apart like so many conferences these days. Several D2 schools in the southeast do fit in the A-Sun's footprint. If you do FCOAs for football, basketball and some other sports? Would it not hurt to also save money by adding schools in the footprint? A-Sun inviting D2 football schools could help get them sponsor A-Sun football which could compete against Southern.

Yes but the ovc believes they are a premier basketball conference and too good to add a d2 school. Una would be an excellent add and a perfect fit for the ovc footprint.

They want to, and need to. But doubling the athletic budget overnight is a problem.

There is also a contingent of folks that don't want to see them move at all for other reasons.

Some of those people have blinders on. Staying D2 would not help with the sports costs one bit.

Going to D1 means that you can be closer in academics with your peers or who you look up to. Being at a lower level, you do not get noticed. Moving up to get your sports team on TV can help bring new students in. Some of these D2 schools are mainly the lower end of the FBS schools who can compete. The issue is trying to save money to get a profit from the sports. A-Sun, Big South and other FCS conferences should look at D2 more. Several D2 schools have better facilities than several D1 schools. West Florida have been doing a lot of upgrading which some of the drawings show are much better than severl of the schools in the Sun Belt Conference.

You don't have to convince me. I simply see both arguments.

Doubling an athletic budget when times are tight does not make a lot of sense in the near term and constitutes a significant risk.

Need donors and all that to help move the school up.

RE: D2 Schools As Candidates To Become D1
West Liberty University in the northern panhandle of West Virginia would be a school to consider. Good facilities for D2, and EXCELLENT basketball that could come in and compete right away. They average almost 2,000 per game right now with a D2 schedule.

Last few years of basketball.

2009-10... 29-3.. .906..... NCAA Sweet 16
2010-11... 33-1.. .971..... NCAA Final 4
2012-13... 34-2.. .944..... NCAA Final 4
2013-14... 31-4.....886.... NCAA National Runner Up
2014-15....28-4.....875.... NCAA Sweet 16
2015-16....31-4.....886..... NCAA Final 4

They also won their conference championship EVERY single one of those years. They have lead the nation in scoring averaging over 100ppg and their coach Jim Crutchfield is the all time winningest coach in NCAA History across all divisions.

There are no teams in the state of West Virginia that participate at the FCS level. They would have the entire state to draw from as there is no competition within the state at that level.

I'm surprised Lenoir-Rhyne wasn't mentioned. Granted, I don't follow them very closely but they always seem like they are up there in the football rankings.

I've never heard anyone bring them up as a call-up possibility, and I have family out that way who know people in the athletic department, or did at least. Doesn't sound like they've ever shown serious interest. The facilities would be lower-level D1/FCS, but that's probably where they'd max out anyway. They'd fit in with the Big South decently enough, I'd think. Maybe it's a money issue (though they do have an endowment pushing $200M), maybe it's a size issue (a bit over 1,500 undergrad). Or maybe they're just content to be where they are. Who knows?

So, literally anyone west of the Mississippi. I feel for The WAC. I get that they are at a point where they can't be picky but They needs to figure out what they want the league to be because their travel will cause issues to trying to convince extremely regional D2 schools to consider moving up.

Probably has a lot to do with the saturated market in the region. Just think about how many DI programs are already within a 200 mile radius of Hickory. Just my back of the napkin math puts it at 30 (all DI programs in NC except ECU and UNC-W, all DI programs in SC except the three Charleston schools, UGA, UT, ETSU, VT, Liberty, and Marshall. There's probably more because I'm not familiar enough with the VA non-football schools to be able to visualize whee they are at on a map) That's a ton of competition in a rather small area.

If the WAC would have gone for FCS football as soon as it lost FBS football, it could have split the Big Sky in an orderly fashion:

Portland State/Eastern Washington
Sacramento State/CSU Bakersfield*
Northern Arizona/Grand Canyon*
Southern Utah/Weber State

Then the Big Sky could have gone:

Montana/Montana State
North Dakota/Northern Colorado
Idaho/Seattle*
Idaho State/Utah Valley*

New Mexico State could have kept FBS football, no UTPA, no UMKC, no Chicago State.

lol, you like that. Big Foot!
The only school that was looking into D-I last year was/is UCSD, TAMU-Commerce according to senior reports. Prior, UNA, GRU-Augusta, Columbus St., Bellarmine
