They'd vote for him again on promises.

And can we have that prize back.

So much for old, white republicans being war mongers. Guess that's an equal opportunity trait.

Are we really at war? Yes we have soldiers in harms way, but not sure I would classify it as a war like Desert Storm.

Sad thing is there is no end in sight due to how unstable the ME is and no matter what we do, I don't think it will help.

We have a professional, volunteer military that is at war and has been for roughly 15 years now.

The country is not at war because the vast majority of its people are not involve din it.

This is the bad thing about not having conscription. Wars tend to go on indefinitely when so few have a direct stake in ending them.

Sorry, OP, for lumping you in if you happen to feel otherwise, but this Obama guy just can't win with some people!

His predecessor begins 2 wars. He ends one of them, but the only response that gets is "why did we pull out of Iraq? That was irresponsible and led to ISIS."

He gets grief for ending one of the wars, but also gets grief for still being at war. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Oh, and there are plenty of things about Obama's presidency I don't like (mostly how similar he is to W in a lot of ways).

And here's a big part of the problem...

Quote:There will be no end to the president’s endless war authority.

In a 138-285 vote, the House rejected an amendment Wednesday night that would have repealed the sprawling 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force passed in the days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The amendment would have revoked the 2001 AUMF within 90 days of the president signing the National Defense Authorization Act, which passed Wednesday night, 277-147.

As amendment sponsor Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) noted on Wednesday, the Congressional Research Service says the broad war authorization has been used to justify military action in 14 countries a total of 37 times — 18 from President George W. Bush, and 19 from President Barack Obama.

The problem is the volunteer army. When only 1 to maybe 5 percent of the population is immediately impacted by a war, then that war can go on and on and on.

Bring back the draft. Make the chickenhawks suit up. IT'll change.

I know some have stated similar...

I don't blame Obama for being at war for longer.....

I blame Obama for promising that he would end wars and ignoring that you can't end something unless the other side stops as well... which I think he and his advisors knew all along, and I blame lots of voters for being so stupid as to believe it.

and FTR, I complained about this as far back as 2008

(10-07-2008 10:51 AM)Hambone10 Wrote:  But... MUCH of Obama's excitement has been based on absolute claims. There was a period a few months ago where he made such bold claims as... he was going to secure ALL Nuclear material and remove all weapons from the earth.... he was going to end our dependency on oil... he was going to cure cancer... he was going to give healthcare to all, and taxcuts to all but the top 1%... end the war... the list was pretty long... and people defended him as a do-er... a visionary with goals and dreams... Now when it appears that he might actually be expected to follow through with his promises, he is becoming more of a realist.

If you want to call that good gamesmanship, then fine. It certainly is... Promise the world... get people excited... THEN scale things back... It's a GREAT way to win an election, or motivate fundraisers, or coach a football team... but its not a very good way to lead a country... and not a direction I want politicians going. I want more of a meal, and less of a presentation.

But others are free to disagree

Here in lies the problem. Too many are willing to believe and repeat the lies, make excuses when his promises don't come to fruition, and place the blame on political opponents.

Yep mostly from Her bread & Butter base, the West End that She camped out with in and worked the churches there that weekend . Bernie dominated nearly everywhere else in the county except the Newburg district.

Nobody in any position of power within the military wants the draft re-instated. They don't want to go back to the condition that out military was in prior to the end of the draft in 1973. In his book with Tom Clancy General Freddie Franks described how much more efficient our military became after the draft ended and consisted of only people who desired to be there.

Besides, the Pentagon itself says that seven out of ten of American 17-24 year olds would fail to qualify for service.

http://time.com/2938158/youth-fail-to-qu...y-service/

Quote:Approximately 71% of the 34 million 17-to-24-year-olds in the U.S. would not qualify for military service because of reasons related to health, physical appearance and educational background, according to the Pentagon.

The ineligible typically includes those who are obese, those who lack a high school diploma or a GED, convicted felons, those taking prescription drugs for ADHD and those with certain tattoos and ear gauges, the Wall Street Journal reports, though some requirements can be waived.
