We are supposed to already have this at the university.

Well, regardless of whether they listen or not, they now have another group on campus whose voice will be officially recognized and will be heard from time to time in the public arena because that many folks cant all be muzzled.

I got nominated for my group but not chosen for this. When I first heard about it, I thought that the UAB employees already has something similar to the faculty senate that this is supposed to be but I learned at that time nope.
