That's a big "if".

Love all the optimism here, but we'll have to play our best game of the year to even be competitive. If this comes to pass (national telecast), then we should approach it like our bowl game, and start game-planning it this summer and develop a BU scout team from day 1. A great TV audience won't do us any good if we get humiliated.

+1 very good points. Hope coaches are reading.

This is a huge chance to "audition" for other conferences. A good competitive performance (IMHO anything less than a 17 point loss) would help tremendously. I wish I could say that I had confidence this was possible but my mindset matches Owl69/../..'s.

yep, very big "if", but stranger things have happened, and if something like that happens, I'd prefer the world saw it.

On the flip side, we roll over at the coin toss like we usually do, end up down 28-0 at the end of Q1 and lose by 60 on national TV, and we can all but guarantee a completely empty stadium for the remainder of the season.

This is a year I'd prefer where Baylor murders us quietly and under the radar.

On a more optimistic note, this could be a trap game for Baylor, as they get Oklahoma State at home the next week. A little bit of Baylor looking past us and a little bit of Rice playing above it's head could lead to an interesting evening. This program is way overdue for an upset.

Sorry, did the dose of reality rain on your parade of delusions?

In that case - Rice deserves a shot at playing in the NC. We can totally win that ONE game

No, but with your negativity I don't even know why you bother following our teams.

Being a fan of a school/team is supposed to be an enjoyable experience.

Do I think we will beat Baylor? No. Do I say to myself "Wouldn't it be awesome to beat them, imagine if we pulled the biggest upset of the season."? Yes

I don't disagree with your assessment of some of the facts about Rice Athletics, it just seems you lack the unrealistic belief in your team that to me at least (in moderation), is what makes being a fan fun.

To the bolded point, guilty as charged. I lack the unrealistic belief. Would it be awesome, absolutely; that said, I don't think about what I would do if I won the lottery.

I am a fan because I love Rice and believe in Rice as an institution. I expect Rice to succeed in athletics as we do in other fields and I expect us to find a way, come hell or high water to do so.

What is not enjoyable or acceptable is making the same decisions that have failed us over and over again. 10 years in, any suspension of disbelief has long passed.

ESPN is on a crusade to make sure Baylor athletics doesn't get away with murder quietly anymore.

RE: Rice - Baylor National TV ?
It seems then that there are two choices:

1) We upset Baylor. If that happens we want to be on national TV.

2) Baylor murders us. In that case we hope the game is played at a secret location at 3:00 A.M. with the results kept secret.

I think there is a third option: We lose, but don't get murdered. Now I know we all have differing definitions of "murdered', but if we have a result that fits your personal "not-murdered", don't we want that on TV?

I feel like the outcome with the highest probability of happening is #2. When I first heard that the game would be on national TV, I was not thrilled - it means a bad day for football activities and a greater chance than not to be utterly embarrassed on a national stage with a lot of prying eyes.

Perhaps the only silver lining is we didn't hire a new coach - that would be an AWFUL way to start their tenure, if we do get slaughtered as I expect.

Mind you, I will still be just as hopeful that we can pull off a miracle as I always am, but boy do I wish we didn't have a national broadcast for this game.

Or a new coach could have energized the team, sort of like when Graham had his debut against UH (unlike Bailiff's Nicholls State disaster).

With Bailiff, #2 is very likely. With a new coach, optimism would still be present.

Let's say the odds of the upset are.01. That does not mean the odds of being murdered are .99. Those are the odds of 2 + 3.

If we avoid playing good teams on TV the odds of getting murdered on TV go to zero - but so do the odds of the world watching when (1) happens.

But, in this world, we will play Baylor on national TV, so might as well do our best to make 1 or 3 happen.

You make a good point about the next coach. When he does come on board, there will be games like this scheduled. In what year of his tenure should we expect him to win one? I say the third year - give him a chance to get his own recruits in and put in the new offense and defense.

I would put the probabilities equal that DB or a new coach would upset a team like Baylor (Baylor is no 2006 UH who lost to U-La-La and USM). The upside of a new coach upsetting Baylor is greater than DB, but I think the downside is worse, IMO.

RE: Rice - Baylor National TV ?
I wonder if the athletics department would consider doing some kind of "Operation Sellout" for this game. It's on a Friday night, so that'll hold the crowd down a little. We need a bunch of fans in the stadium for this one, especially since it'll be on TV. On a side note, I applaud Baylor for coming down to play in Rice Stadium. A lot of P5 schools would be reluctant to do so. It's a trap.

When these games were scheduled Baylor wasn't that good. Also the athletic department has been pushing ticket sales hard.

Yeah. I forgot about that. I bet we could get Texas Tech to come down again.
