Big XII Network of the Willing?
Why not start a network of the willing schools?

All have their third-tier rights, and can join such a network if/when desired. The contract could be negotiated to expand with teams and viewership.

Obviously, UT would be the last to join or maybe never would.

But I suspect if OU and KU bought into the idea, this model could happen.

There is not enough revenue to support a network without Texas rolling it in, and even that model projects only $20 million per year. Once you pay Texas their $15 million, the other nine split $5 million. The deal is over. Everybody is staying put for now. When the TV contracts run out, you may see some movement, but that is 8-10 years away for most P5 leagues.

Why not? Because it would probably lose money. Oklahoma and Kansas already get more for their Tier 3 rights than any payout would bring from a network even if it did make a modest profit. So they would be subsidizing the other willing schools. Which is to say that OU and KU would not be willing.

Without UT, OU and KU, no media partner would touch this.

It's too bad the Pac 12/Big 12 can't have a joint network. Seems like it could be mutually beneficial.

OU and KU have their own network that brings each about $6-7 million per year. Why would they want to give that up if the conference network did not exceed that.....which it most likely wouldn't without Texas..

It most likely wouldn't even with Texas. The Big 12 has by far the smallest population in its footprint. The suggestion that it would be mutually beneficial for the PAC and B12 to share a network is probably on target. The PAC needs the eyeballs that the state of Texas would provide and California provides eyeballs the B12 needs as well. But something besides just network revenue sharing would be needed to make this happen - some sort of scheduling arrangement that provides content of interest to both regions at the same time.

Wouldn't it be funny if the Big 12 teams up with the PAC and then ends up expanding WEST?!

Without Texas, the other schools just don't have the market value to make a network viable. And OU won't want to share their tier-3 value without Texas either.

RE: Big XII Network of the Willing?
OU and KU are gone... hello B1G. They need to beef that west division in both sports. Delaney will make them a Godfather type offer.

UT is going to end up with ND in the ACC to guarantee the ACC a playoff bid every year. Swofford will hit the lottery, much to my chagrin.

The Big 12 remainders poach the AAC. You'd have seven Big 12 schools left over, then add 5. UConn, UC, USF, UCF, and Memphis/Temple. ECU and Memphis/Temple for 14 total. Rest of the AAC is out of luck. Back to CUSA for you folks. However, the SEC is in play to poach Okie St, and KSU. Possibly TCU to get into Fort Worth. The Pac 12 would be in play for Houston and KSU, as well as TTech. Baylor or ISU to round it out to 16.

At the end of the day, you will have a P4, and what will be a new subdivision essentially. The only time P4 schools will be left out of the playoff is if the champ is a 3 or 4 loss squad, paving the way for the Cinderella in the dance.

Frankly, I'm hoping to preserve the current format and hope the Big 12 can strengthen its position in the future to consolidate and retain whatever tradition is left. If Memphis ever becomes a powerhouse and wins a few BCS bowls, they will be added in with UC.
