ETSU Rebranding 2 years Later
http://www.etsu.edu/univrela/identity/at...erence.pdf

It has been almost 2 years since ETSU did a rebrand for not only the athletic department but for the whole university. Despite some initial reservations (http://csnbbs.com/thread-694704.html) I believe the new logos, colors and uniforms have been met with lots of praise. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well the new logos have taken off around the area. I see lots more cars and hats with the E logo than I ever saw with Darth Bucky.

I know some think that our colors are moving more towards West VA but actually our colors are exactly the same as the Cal Bears. We both are using Pantone 282 C for Navy and Pantone 123 C for Gold (http://calbears.com/pics33/0/EP/EPPDACKZ...ID=30100). Just totally guessing here but I imagine Nike may have gave ETSU some input on the color change. The "old gold" that was previously used was a tough color to get uniforms for in the past. Using the same color palette as a major school probably makes it easier for us to get uniforms and gear (consequently Cal is moving to Under Armour next year).

Torch Creative was the company behind the logos of the rebrand. Here is a link to their Dribble site which has some incomplete logos they did for ETSU (https://dribbble.com/torch_creative ).

I know a lot of people scoff at taking the time to redo the branding and logos but I believe it has and will make a huge impact for ETSU in the future. The old ETSU "mountain" logo looked more like a physicians office logo than a university logo and our athletic logos have been all over the place. The E logo has the potential to last for decades and is something that while simple, is easily identifiable.

RE: ETSU Rebranding 2 years Later
The comments on The Torch Creative Dribble site are nice to read. People were pretty complementary of the different ones from what I see, especially the E with the TN outline in it. I think that's one of my favorite parts of the rebranding too.

I am still quite happy with the branding and the unification of everything. I see so many more ETSU logo'd items around town than I did when we first moved here as well. I also think the new Bucky costume is SOOOOOO much better!

I also have grown to really love the new logo. The E with the state of Tennessee was a stroke of brilliance I think. It says who we are and also where we are plus it is a nice efficient and consistent symbol. I believe it will be the symbol for a very long time.

Definitely. The old Bucky was blue like a smurf. This one is much better.

RE: ETSU Rebranding 2 years Later
It makes me happy to see the E logo on cars and elsewhere. I never knew how much support there was for the university in the community. The return of football, improvement of basketball, and other campus initiatives have helped to bring attention. I hope it will translate into true brand recognition & brand equity for coming generations of ETSU students.

Go East.

I will never like the E, but I must say that the university has done a very good job with the branding using it. Everything that I see looks classy and modern. Much better than our previous branding (or lack thereof).

Here is a link to the full standards guide for athletics http://www.etsubucs.com/media/General%20...ide(1).pdf

They really need to work on this one next for the guest announcers and TV:

East Tennessee State University in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references should be ETSU.
ETSU is the preferred reference for announcers, scoreboard displays, statistical abbreviations, etc.
East Tennessee, East Tennessee State, Eastern or State are not acceptable.

"East Tennessee" and "East Tennessee State" are 'not acceptable'? ??? Heck, that second one is the name of the place, just minus the "University".

That said........I always liked the "mountain" logo, but realize it's comparison to a "physician's office logo" is somewhat apt. (Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, sayeth thedoctor.) And I can clearly remember the fanfare and self-congratulating that came with that one - very similar to what we now have for this one. It was deemed a big success.

I'm not one to worry much about this sort of thing, though. I do think most organizations re-do their slogans and logos far too often. It seems to this observer that it sometimes can be a task that an organization undertakes in lieu of doing something substantive. It's almost like a new political leader changing cabinets. I've been around long enough to have gone through several of these changes for "Johnson City", for example. And certainly it's true that ETSU has had multiple versions of it's branding over the recent (in my time scale) years. And thus it had gotten a tad muddled.

So I wasn't thrilled with yet another (again, in my time scale) version of our logo. Especially on the heels of the "official tartan". (Really? Come on. An official tartan?!? Who knew *that* was even a thing.) (And sorry Mrs. Noland, but that's frivolity near it's extreme.)

Which all leads up to me being mildly, but pleasantly, surprised at how well, and how broadly, the new logo has been accepted. And that's a *very* healthy sign that the university's presence and perhaps "closet fandom" was greater than some thought. But many of us knew, and so stated on these forums, that with just enough oomph and success, that the support would become more visible. So this is very good to see.

As to the logo itself......I'm not thrilled with it, but it *is* a pretty good one. If it truly 'sticks' for several decades, or a couple of generations, at least, then that's great. (I'm saying here and now, though, that it won't be a dominant thing for more than 20-30 years, at most. That's just the way human fickleness works.)
