If not, well, let's face it, we will pretty much be done in athletics. Calkins is a smarmy know-it-all, but I agree with him that this is THE moment for Tiger athletics. The likelihood that UT/Oklahoma State/OSU and Texas Tech would bolt for the Pac-12 is extremely small. I chose to be half-way optimistic when the Big East came calling, but I knew that there was always a chance elsewhere and I knew the Big East was not very sturdily constructed.

In this case, there really is no other option than to be optimistic. Not only rationally, but the alternative is dreadful.

Let's put it this way: Fred Smith recognizes the importance of this moment. He has said they will sponsor a Big 12 championship game and probably has a VERY good idea about the quid pro quo aspect in terms of the amounts and the payoffs. Fred also knows the downside of the failure to get in and when taking the differential, it is enormous.

Sponsoring the Big East BB tourney? That doesn't cost a huge amount, but it probably did not have a huge payoff either.

Sponsoring a Big 12 championship game? Probably costs much more, but the payoff is pretty darn huge as well.

And I am pretty sure Fred knows this, as does Rudd.

Well put. It is interesting how it seems there is a feeling that our inclusion in the Big East was somehow a negative. Don't get me wrong, it certainly did not provide all we hoped it would with ongoing inclusion in the BCS and all the fruits that would have entailed. That being said, it was certainly a step up for us and has enabled us to be part of the best conference outside of the P5 both in football and basketball. It's really not even close. Could you imagine if we were still in CUSA? I shudder to consider that reality.

At the end of the day, the effort was successful and my hope is it will be again. Best case scenarios for us in my view is to either to get invited to the BXII, or no one from the AAC gets invited so we can continue to build on some significant successes as of late. I am obviously hoping for the former. Here's to hoping.
