Hmm FedEx B12 Championship Football Game?

Hey, gotta respect Memphis, they are pulling out the big guns. When I worked for Nortel, as legal told us, it is not a bribe but a facilitation payment. 04-cheers

Wonder if UCF goes after Disney?

Cinci goes after Kroger or P&G?

UCONN goes after The Harford?

I think it's great that fedex is really backing Memphis and I hope they would. However, we heard this exact same song and dance a few years ago along with adding the Liberty bowl to the BE. As far as I know FedEx isn't giving the AAC money like they said they would.

Because that was only for being in a power conference.

I think many corporations would be interested in sponsoring a Big12 CCG.

FedEx has nothing to do with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl....and FedEx was promising sponsorship to a BCS bid having Big East...not the AAC.

RE: Hmm FedEx B12 Championship Football Game?
If they were serious about helping Memphis get into the Big12, then the FedEx guy would become the T. Boone Pickens of Memphis and splash enough cash on their athletic department to get their athletic budget up to Ok State's level. That would get it done. Not just offering to be a title sponsor of a CCG, given that (as pointed out above) many companies would be willing to do that.

Who knows what will come of it, but it sounds like a larger proposal than just the CCG.

Quote:"We strongly support the university's efforts to become a member of an expanded Big 12 athletic conference," Smith wrote to Rudd in a letter dated Feb. 23. "In support of [Memphis'] Big 12 aspirations, we have researched college conference sponsorships and are prepared to become a major Big 12 sponsor of football and basketball."

Smith also wrote that FedEx would be prepared to sponsor a Big 12 championship game.

First of all, this is all hot air. And even if FedEx steps up the way they say they will, they are inciting a shareholder action for breach of fiduciary duty to their shareholders.

I'm aware that the liberty bowl is separate, I was merely saying that this was one of the selling points and it completely fell through.

By sponsoring athletic events? They should give up the FedEx cup in golf as well then. FedEx and their dang advertising and sponsoring of athletic events is killing the brand and stock price, shareholders should begin litigation immediately.

See the list of examples just above here? It's called smart business sports marketing. FedEx spends tens of millions on it every year, with a great ROI. Nothing wrong with aiming a bunch at the Big 12 as long as it makes business sense, and of course, it will.

Not to mention, beyond smart marketing, FedEx understands the importance of Memphis being perceived as a big league city, b/c it attracts more educated people to bolster the job pool there.

Just smart investing. FedEx tried to do it with the Big East invite, but the league soon fell apart, and it didn't make business sense to invest in the AAC. The Big 12 is a horse of a different color.

But NOT following through with the Big East/AAC proves that FedEx won't do it if it doesn't make business sense. The BoD wouldn't allow it.

And it is MUCH more than a $20-25M investment per year in a Big 12 CCG. The letter also mentions being a "major Big 12 sponsor in football and basketball."

RE: Hmm FedEx B12 Championship Football Game?
Boise State got a big business backing them as well. Their field is named after a founder of a large grocery chain in the US. A lot of founders and business leaders are coming out of colleges and universities that are not even P5 schools. The landscape in big donors are coming into other schools now. If they continued the large donations? The G5 schools could catch up to the P5 schools in spending.

RE: Hmm FedEx B12 Championship Football Game?
There are currently 3 audition games this fall:

September 3 - Oklahoma @ Houston (NRG Stadium)
September 17 - Kansas @ Memphis
September 24 - BYU v. WVU in Maryland

This won't ever happen, but what the Big 12 should do is immediately drop to an 8-game conference schedule for the 2016 season (and institute a CCG). Big 12 schools that are hosting 5 conference games would host one of the candidates. Big 12 schools that are playing 5 conference games travel to one of the candidates or play at a neutral site. Some FCS payday games could be cancelled or postponed. Sure, there would be some cancellation penalties, lost revenues, and new travel costs; but we're talking chump change with Big 12 membership on the line and to get the expansion right.

There are also a bunch games among candidates this fall.

Here are some potential matchups that could work with the reduced conference schedule and cancelled FCS payday games:

SEPTEMBER 3
Oklahoma @ Houston (NRG Stadium)[already scheduled]
Oklahoma St. @ Cincinnati
Baylor @ USF
Memphis @ Texas Tech
Kansas @ UConn
UCF @ Iowa St.

SEPTEMBER 10
Houston @WVU

SEPTEMBER 15/17
Kansas @ Memphis[already scheduled]
Colorado St. @ TCU
Houston @ Cincy

SEPTEMBER 24
BYU v. WVU (in Maryland)[already scheduled]

SEPTEMBER 29
UConn @ Houston

OCTOBER 1
USF @ Cincy

OCTOBER 8
Cincy @ UConn

OCTOBER 15
UConn @ USF

OCTOBER 22
UCF at UConn

OCTOBER 29
UCF @ Houston

NOVEMBER 5
BYU @ Cincy

NOVEMBER 12
TCU @ BYU
USF @ Memphis
Cincy @ UCF

NOVEMBER 18
Memphis @ Cincy

NOVEMBER 25/26
Houston @ Memphis
UCF @ USF

Then, the Big 12 can evaluate the attendance, TV ratings, on-field competition, and CFP rankings to get some real-world data on where and how to expand.

Why do you think the Memphis Tigers play in FedExForum instead of just staying in their own, upgraded stadium, The Pyramid?

you go right on thinking that...

If you can't see the difference between spending shareholders monew because you think it is worth the advertising fee, and using your advertising monew to support a university getting into an athletic conference then you are lost. Are you telling me that it is not a good use of shareholder money to sponsor the B12 today (which must be true because they don't) but is if Memphis joins? That is nuts. FedEx money cannot be used for any purpose other than returning value to shareholders - despite the protestations of Memphis fans.

This is a total, desperate Hail Mary straight from Memphis' Big East playbook, which the Big East didn't buy amd I doubt the Big12 will either. The B12 expansion is focused on a TV network; perhaps your pitch should focus on that instead of publicly begging - which Boren warned against.
