Interesting ESPN article on Memphis and others (Big 12)
http://espn.go.com/college-football/stor...-expansion
On Feb. 24, Memphis president David Rudd penned a letter to the West Virginia president, and copied Oklahoma president David Boren and Baylor president Ken Starr, the other two members of the composition committee, as well as former Big 12 board chairman and Kansas State president Kirk Schulz, where Rudd pledged that Memphis will make a $500 million investment in academic and athletic infrastructure over the next five years. Rudd also enclosed a letter from FedEx chairman Fred Smith, who states that the delivery services giant headquartered in Memphis will be behind the school's Big 12 campaign.

RE: Interesting ESPN article on Memphis and others (Big 12)
What troubles me about the article is that is says that President Gee went to Houston, the Big 12 committee contacted Central Florida to let then know that they are on their radar and they also contacted Colorado State.
All it says about Memphis is that we contacted them. It does not say that they responded to Presidentify Rudd or Fred Smith. I sure hope they did and said similar things to us. The title makes it sound that they are courting the University of Memphis.

I had same initial thoughts, I just have to believe an offer like this was done in person as well

Guys, this was all done over the past 18 months, many face to face meetings.

Contacted after they sent "brochures" to the BigXII. To me it looked like UCF and CSU took a note from RC's play book.

I fully understand that and I know that they did more that write letters and send pamphlets and they hopefully met numerous times in person, but in regards to what the ESPN article said, representatives from the Big 12 contacted our rivals but the article does not say that they contacted us to let us know that they are also interested in us.

I take most articles I read, stories I hear, etc... with a rather large grain of salt.

RE: Interesting ESPN article on Memphis and others (Big 12)
We need to clarify and stress that the 500 mill is not contingent on the Big 12 acceptance. The article is a bit vague/ambiguous. I can hear adversaries state, "if you have this money, why are you waiting." We aren't. We are doing as much as we can with the limitations we are facing to invest in it all. I wish it were more emphatically clear that the 500 mill is evidence of what we can do without Big 12 nembership.
Buy into us, and we can do more at the U of M, and more importantly for decisionmakers, the Big 12 can do more with FedEx, maybe come up with something creative and cillaborative with St Jude, and certain centers of excellence such as the Cybersecurity Center at the U of M.

I share that concern, and hope it's just ab overreaction on my part.
