Fact check: FIU used 3 pitchers today. And we had an extra base hit.

Owls win clinched their 24th straight 30-win season. It was Fox's 1st CG and he had a career high 10 Ks.

Well, that's one streak extended.. Not one I was worried about.

??? How have we scored only 4 runs total? We also had a ton of hits both days. I do think our offense is what keeps us from making a run to Omaha but this weekend they've done ok.

Knowing how good our pitching and defense are, we've elected to trade outs for SUCCESSFUL bunts which have resulted in key runs.

Sorry Walt. If you're going to believe in the bunt, you'll just have to be satisfied with 2-0 and 3-0 wins.

We've had more than twenty times the offense of FIU in both games so far :)

Walt has a point. We have barely cobbled together five runs against some pretty bad pitchers. We face their best starter today, and their bullpen is well rested. Meanwhile, Salinas is not starting, so our pitching will not be our best. The offense is going to have to score probably at least four or five runs against much better pitching today. If I remember correctly, Amador last less than two innings against Charlotte, whose offense is reputed to be less adept than FIU's. And we had to pitch Otto four or five innings. Fortunately, he should be relatively well rested.

We continue to get increased national attention-- both the Owls and the conference-- as we're featured in D1Baseball's "10 Thoughts From Saturday" column...

Quote:4. C-USA co-leaders post matching shutouts

Rice University logoRice and Southern Miss entered the weekend tied for first place in Conference USA, and they remain tied after each team has won its first two games this weekend. A day after Jon Duplantier and Glenn Otto combined on a shutout at Florida International, the Owls got another shutout in Saturday’s series-clinching 3-0 win. This time, veteran lefthander Blake Fox went the distance himself, scattering six hits and allowing no walks while striking out 10.

Southern Miss logoSouthern Miss won Friday’s opener against Western Kentucky with its bats, 12-5. But Saturday, the Golden Eagles rode their arms to a 3-0 win of their own. Kirk McCarty (6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K) was superb, and Nick Johnson and Nick Sandlin combined with strong relief work in a combined three-hitter. Southern Miss and Rice are now both 17-6 in the league, with Florida Atlantic just a game back at 16-7 after winning the first two games against UTSA. This race looks like it will be compelling right down to the wire.

Yeah, but FIU slapped us around for a run today. We need a pitching staff that can compete for an entire weekend.
