There are several great teams with 2-3 better prospects than dedric and some worse teams with better prospects. It's not 2008 and we're not a top 4 team. Our best player isn't automatically an elite player.

What does how good the team is have to do with a player's NBA draft position? Nothing.

No, it doesn't. But you need to open your eyes to how many good players there are and high ranked players there are at schools like Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, Indiana, Michigan State, etc. etc.

There's a whole world of talent. Just because dedric averaged 15 and 9 while getting to play 32 minutes/game and have the unlimited green light doesn't mean he's a first round pick. Look at the mock drafts. It's all good players in there.

Those are all blue blood schools who will get the best players virtually every year. So naturally they will have more NBA players. Duh.

Saw the best young backcourt in the league tonight put an ass whupping on GSW. Liliard and McCollum. Google where they went to school and how good their college teams were. Both first round picks.

Memphis has a pretty decent track record for getting players drafted high. I DID NOT say Dedric would be a first round pick. Actually posted that I thought he would come back to school.

One thing I will say is he would be picked somewhere in top 64 players. Probably in 30-40 range with good workouts and combine. READ MY POST.

I guess "decent track record for getting players drafted high" is subjective.

You have to ignore the last 7 years or so

The scout look at the whole body of work. They noticed that he was responsible for 25% of the teams turnovers by himself and just 10 fewer than the next two guys combined. They do not just look at the 16 and 9 and draft on that. They examine the whole picture when evaluating a player.

Look at last months stats. Kid was a high school senior.

I've been watching this stuff for a long time. A couple things that improve or hurt your draft value are:

1. Athleticism
2. Ability to guard a position in the NBA. (this is where the word "Tweener" originated.)

With regards to Dedric, he has good size and decent handles, but he doesn't wow with his athleticism. He likely projects as a 4, so he's going to have to guard some of the stretch 4's in the NBA. I don't think we've seen anything that shows he is above average in that area either.

There's no doubt that he is skilled, and he can play in the NBA. He just doesn't have some of these intangibles that teams look for in the draft.

What do y'all guess:
25% chance he's gone?
Higher? Lower?

Slightly higher, maybe 1 in 3.

Dedric is looking at spending next year in Sioux Falls and places like that in the D-League. Not getting a real chance to play with KJ and away mom and dad. One would think that would be the deciding factor.

Agreed, guess I could have been more concise.

You think a big man who shot 40% is getting drafted in the 1st round?

If he stays in he can still make money don't get me wrong.

But it shows that he'd rather play overseas than stay at Memphis.

I have no problem with him leaving after next year, but for the own kid's sake he is making a mistake for his long term future if he leaves this year. I do believe he can be a 1st round pick next year.

I'd say top 45.

30-40 as I stated early. Dedric is a true college freshman this year. I was very down on him but he improved tremendously the last month to 6 weeks against the best teams we played. Any guy his size that can shoot the way he can in the new NBA will get an uptick in his draft spot.

Not Top Teams:

Watching Steph Curry (Davidson), Damian Lillard (Weber State) & C.J. McCollum (Lehigh). It's not about the level it's about the opportunity.
