RE: Rod Carey Fired??
But I do agree this random speculation does hurt the University and the current team. Carey's job is to coach the kids. His report card is their record. He is not doing so well. I think he has several checks in the "needs improvement" category.

This entire situation is horrible, worst case for everything that this program has done in the past 7 years. Feels like our program is only a shell of it's self lately. To lose at home to Western Illinois is not acceptable to me. I did not watch the game, but it feels like our kids show up, and that's about it. As far as Carey, head scratcher. I wish I could attend practices to see the tone of practice, that would tell a lot. I love my Huskies, time to move forward, and quickly.

As someone who has direct contact with this team all I can say is that Rod has lost this team and they will not perform as long as he is leading no way to fix it. Time to move on before many many players leave next year !!

If you're concerned about players leaving then you should probably stop posting this over and over again. I appreciate the info but current players and future players likely find their way to this board from time to time.

So you think what you say on here really matters?

Cowboy hit the nail on the head.

Anyone who thinks players quit has never played, or ... I don't know. I played for a coach or two that I REALLY didn't like. It doesn't matter one bit when the whistle blows. When the whistle blows, your instincts take over. You play hard-- like it's life or death, because it is what you do. It is who you are. There is no other way.

However, in football, if you weren't all in in the meeting room, or the schemes suck, or the right play isn't called (beyond your control as a player) then you are not going to succeed. So, comment on Carey all you want, but I don't think comments on players are warranted. Do you have specific personal knowledge of even one player in one instance not playing hard? No. So, probably not good to go there.

Fan psychologizing things with player performance always makes me nuts.

The two most likely explanations for struggling play are either: random variance (think ballplayer in a slump) and just not being as good as the other team. The ship on random variance has sailed. So we're stuck with not being good enough.

And that's all the evaluation anyone needs to make a case for coaching change here.

But our brains need narratives so we're clutching at straws to fulfill that need- so someone has to be made a villain I guess.

Okay, if you think the coaching change is being over-rationalized, fire the players then. It's NOT that they don't have the talent. It's that they don't have the attitude, desire, and drive to win. Don't believe that? Just watch them play and their body language on the sideline. I saw it big time last Saturday and could not believe it. Even my wife saw it, and she's usually not as into the game as I am. And yet we as fans are supposed to sit there, get giddy with excitement, and cheer them on....or STF will think we're bad fans. I did something on Saturday that I have never done before. I spent almost the entire game playing with my phone. At least that, together with the beautiful weather and excellent food selections, brought a little joy to what was a miserable day.

which begs the question, if the seniors and juniors don't want to contribute, why not start the sophomores or those who do want to play? For all this fan talk of internal strife, i'm confused as to:

1.) why no one has said who the detractors are
2.) who the initial insult was against

i would think in this era of social media, someone would have said something.

I put the team not being good enough on the staff. Not being good enough isn't some moral failing that players should lose scholarships for- they're competent but there just aren't enough guys close enough to the pointy end of ability and performance right now to sustain success. Good players graduated or got hurt and the next guys up haven't developed to their predecessor's level.

Or make it about imaginary sports radio caller things like "body language" and what you think the level of "desire" is.

If effort wasn't there- SDSU and WIU stay blowouts. Lack of "desire" doesn't get 0-4.

I see the more likely explanation for the erosion as the staff missing on scouting and development. That's fixable. Better coaching develops the existing roster better. Better coaches are better talent evaluators too.

That means changing staffs- and is a whole hell of a lot better reason than body language and desire.

+1. Our talent level is not as high as we would like. Our offensive line is poor, and our skill players aside from Golladay are not difference makers. Our defense isn't much better, and our special teams are below average. That is on the coaches. Either they can't recruit talent, or they cannot develop 2 star players into 4 star talent. Whatever the case, it's pretty evident in the results on the field. We need new coaching leadership, but I would caution that the teams needs significant upgrades in addition to the coaching.

that was my point. for as porous as this place is, i'd figure someone at some point would have outted someone. hence why i find this rumor tough to believe. there are way to many reasons it isn't possible.

To be a lousy football team all you need is the players to stop listening to the coaches thereby not following their assignments and/or not preparing the way they should. Seems obvious that these things are happening.

Well that settles it! If Dog Fan and his wife saw something that they wanted to see, it must be true. 03-lmfao

Why would Dogfan want to see a team that doesn't look like they want to be there? He's as big a fan as any on here.

Yes, it doesn't take a conspiracy theorist to see something pretty awful is going on with that team.

I've never really paid attention until this year so maybe it's always been this way, but I've noticed Carey almost never is part of the team huddles on time outs. For all I know that is normal for most teams, but it's not what I would have thought. Anyone know if most Head Coaches are talking to the teams during time outs or is it their position coaches? Considering most Coordinators are up in a skybox I would think it would be the Head Coach doing a lot of the talking to the players.

RE: Rod Carey Fired??
One thing that I thought I noticed with Doeren, is that even after a mistake during a game, he seemed like he used it as a teaching moment, many times he wasn't yelling at the player, but talking to him. Presumably he did plenty of that in practice. Anyway, I just get the feeling that it kept the players a little looser. Just my opinion looking at it from afar.

RE: Rod Carey Fired??
The players, some of whom do not have full scholarships, make a sacrifice to play football at NIU. This is not a Big 5 program where there is prestige and opportunities are made available to the players. I understand they do get compensation, but they earn it. The time they put in to be part of the team is staggering. That is why, if it is true they are unhappy with the program the university athletic administration should pay attention. It is difficult enough to recruit a good player to NIU when the players are satisfied with the program.

I may not like my boss, but I am getting paid to do a job. If I fail to do that job to the best of my ability, I will lose my job and paycheck, and someone else will get my job. There is also pride and professionalism. The players are getting "paid" via a scholarship as well as other benefits thanks to generous donors. I am NOT saying that the players are doing this on purpose, but, man, it sure seems like it sometimes. If this is a conscious effort on the part of the players, what if they don't like the next coach? Will the same thing happen? This stinks.

Some coaches are better motivators than others. Some are better at developing players. Some are better at utilizing the talent they have, and forming an alternate plan when key players go down. The players, themselves, do not have the luxury of choosing another coach, after signing on with the team. They only have four years to finish out their FB career or prove they deserve a shot at pro football. That is not enough time to throw a season and wait for a better coach to get hired. There are players in the NFL who went to Eastern Michigan, so there is still plenty to play for.

Carey may have trouble motivating his team, and that may get him fired, but that does not mean his team is motivated to get him fired.
