Memphis prez: P5 expansion will go past Big 12, maybe up to 80 schools
Rudd, in radio interview, predicts Power 5 realignment will go beyond Big 12 expansion
Posted: 4:17 p.m.
By Phil Stukenborg of The Commercial Appeal
If the Big 12 conference expands by two schools as early as this summer the move won't necessarily signal an end to programs joining power conferences, according to University of Memphis president Dr. M. David Rudd.
Rudd, appearing Thursday on WHBQ-AM 560's Middays with Eli Savoie and Greg Gaston, said he expects the number of schools in power conferences ultimately could grow to 80 from the current 65 in the five Power Five leagues (plus Notre Dame). The Big 12 is considering adding two programs to increase its chances of appearing in the four-team College Football Playoff by as much as 15 percent.
Memphis is one of several schools being mentioned as an expansion candidate. Cincinnati, BYU, Central Florida, South Florida, Houston and Boise State also have been listed. "With respect to the Big 12, I'm not convinced there won't be additional realignment down the road," Rudd said. "It certainly is encouraging to hear of the opportunities that are emerging right now, but I don't think it stops there.
"I don't think it goes from 65 to 67 major universities. I'm one of those presidents that is convinced this probably, at the end of the day, will shake out at about 80 universities as part of the universities that are in power conferences."

In other words, Memphis isn't joining the B12.

So....4 conferences of 20 teams each? Playoff isn't expanding, only the conferences.

That's one way to take it. Guess we'll see in a few weeks.

That's one way to get there. Or maybe 5x16? I don't think 80 is a magic number. It's more like a few more teams of some number will likely jump the wall before the P5 breaks away or forms into its own NCAA division.
It probably makes sense for political, scheduling and geographic reasons, among others.

I've been saying what Rudd's saying all along.
There will be more realignment and the bottom line is the B12 may be the sick man of the P5 but P5 it will remain.
B12 loses Texas schools but gains 6-8 from the AAC and remains P5 will push numbers not too far from 80.

Some MWC members will be part of the 80 group as well. Boise State is way too hot to ignore any longer. I can see a North Dakota State in the mixed somewhere as well. Big 10 wanted to go to 22 to 24 teams. 4 pods of 6 rounds out better than 4 pods of 5.

Been saying all along. Hope I'm right good to hear an AD say it. Anybody that is putting a budget and capital outlay on their University right now is aware of the shift and is either meeting the minimum (budget size) and (facility upgrades) expects to make the power five. That's all of AAC and some of MWC. Anybody not doing that right now expect that they will be a part of the 50 or so teams that will be the next level. The good news for those 50. (G5) they will have some access via lightning in the bottle. 12-0 at large bid. (totally my opinion).

How on earth would the Big 12 remain P5 without Texas and with 6-8 AAC schools? They would be booted in five minutes. Not to mention that OK would never stick around for that.

I fear you are correct. I had initially thought that a USF - UCF Florida move would come first, but that was assuming that for whatever reason, BYU was off the table.
But if four years as a failed Notre Dame wanna-be has wised them up, then yeah, BYU - Cincy will be the two to go.

80 seems a little high.
Maybe 5 x 14 = 70
Add in about 4 independents and final number is.....

If you were an honest man, you would have said "hope" instead of "fear". Good, good, the hate that is within you is deliciously strong. The football, basketball and baseball ass-whippings we administered over the past few years are yielding the desired results.

Why would I "hope" for any combination of teams going to the Big 12 that doesn't include USF?

I disagree....I think if the Big XII acted fast and got a handful of programs like BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, UConn, and bumped themselves up to 16, they'd get to stay....
They'll be seen as the weakest P5, but they'll get to stay. The Big XII has a contract with the Sugar Bowl and SEC....no one is going to just burn that up in 5 seconds.

RE: Memphis prez: P5 expansion will go past Big 12, maybe up to 80 schools
A year or so ago I heard Cincinnati's AD (Mike Bohn) and Coach Tuberville say something similar. The reason we have seen so many schools outside the P5 build up their facilities the past few years is because the word was out on the street that a select number of schools were going to be added to the power structure and then the split was going to take place. Basically everyone in the G5 has been auditioning to make the final cut the past couple of seasons.
How this will look in the future is unclear. Many believe the new structure will result in some sort of conference restructuring where teams will be aligned geographically. I think this makes sense for a lot of reasons.

You are hoping Memphis does not get in - sorry that was so hard to comprehend.
