You and about 27 other people know there is a cusa. That's probably why their tv contract is a coupon to Home Depot and a year supply of Ramen Noodles.

Who's Taunting Now? Tulsa, Coley Take It Out On Cincinnati
March 20, 2000|By Travis Miller, Tribune Staff Writer.
4
NASHVILLE — After what happened here Sunday afternoon, some introductions are in order. Bracket-meisters across the country, meet the Golden Hurricane from Tulsa. Tulsa, welcome to the Sweet 16.
According to the seedings and national public opinion, No. 7 seed Tulsa's 69-61 victory over No. 2 seed Cincinnati could be considered an upset. But for those select few who watched the Golden Hurricanes (31-4) win 29 games during the regular season and cruise to a first-round win over UNLV, Sunday's win over the Kenyon Martin-less Bearcats (29-4) came as no surprise.
Even Sunday, in front of 17,297 fans in the Gaylord Entertainment Center, the possibility of an upset immediately seemed ripe. Out to prove that its six NCAA tournament appearances in the last seven years were no flukes, the Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the game's first nine minutes.
"We do operate best when our backs are against the wall," Tulsa coach Bill Self said. "It was just a chance to prove ourselves on a national stage, and that's what happened."
The most significant introduction came between Tulsa forward Eric Coley and Cincinnati forward Pete Mickeal, who said Saturday he didn't know how to pronounce Coley's name, and then taunted him with it during the game, Coley said.
Coley responded with what Self called the best game of his career, collecting 16 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots, including two victory-sealing rejections in the final minute of play.
"When I was told that, I kind of took it as a slap in the face," Coley said. "We used that to fuel our fire. Somebody else said they didn't know Tulsa was in Oklahoma. We've been in the Top 25 all year, but after [Sunday] I think they know my name and they know where Tulsa is."
Actually, both teams were battling with an identity crisis. Tulsa was trying to build a public identity, and Cincinnati was still trying to find its identity after Martin's leg injury two weeks ago. Although the Bearcats said they felt comfortable in their revised offense, they did not appear so. All Martin could do was wave a towel and cheer his teammates.
Without Martin patrolling the middle for the Bearcats, Tulsa beat Cincinnati at its own game, applying pressure defense and pushing the ball up the court. The Golden Hurricane forced the Bearcats into 14 turnovers and made 11 steals.Tulsa also grabbed five more rebounds than Cincinnati.
But after getting behind early, Cincinnati slowly climbed back into the game. With 6 minutes 20 seconds left in the first half, the Bearcats went to a half-court trapping zone defense that held Tulsa to one field goal and three points the rest of half. The Golden Hurricane still led 31-24 at intermission, but less than four minutes into the half the Bearcats tied it 32-32 on a three-pointer by DeMarr Johnson.
The Bearcats then went up 50-45 with 8:11 to play behind five straight points from Ryan Fletcher (13 points). But not wanting to waste its upset opportunity, and relieved after Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins called off the Bearcats' half-court trap, Tulsa went on a 14-0 run that didn't end until 4:16 was left to play. By then the Golden Hurricane was up 59-50.
Mickeal led the Bearcats with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tulsa's David Shelton, a Cincinnati native, came off the bench to score 14 points and grab seven rebounds.

Would Logan rank higher than Van Exel? As an opponent's fan, Nick sure seemed to be a more valuable player, but I didn't see them except when they played Memphis or on TV.

Otherwise, I agree, Van Exel would blow Logan off the court IMHO. Pretty easy to forget about GMC.......it lasted for so long....(Major sarcasm insert here)......... great bball conference though.
