I am extremely against getting rid of cheerleading. The cheerleaders are an extremely important part of the game and game-day experience. It is not fair to the cheerleaders, who have to pay a lot of their own costs and work so hard at what they do. If they need donations to keep them afloat, I will certainly give.

So no word on how much money they get from Athletics or the University rather than fundraising and sponsorships?...seems like an important piece of the article is missing.

Also do the Silverettes count as part of this group or is it separate?

To call the recommendation to eliminate Cheerleading moronic would be an insult to morons.

Let's see, Cheerleading gives zero scholarships, the cheerleaders rarely travel to road games and the Coach makes next to nothing. Yeah, eliminating Cheerleading is gonna save big bucks. 01-wingedeagle

RE: cheerleading update
Perhaps they should give an estimated # that the cheerleaders activities actually cost NIU, not say athletics has to cut their budget. Or maybe have another article showing staff salaries and their avg per year, cost per student and % of the budget. Or maybe just the link showing staff salaries. And perhaps a chart showing how much each student pays on average per department and then how much each student actually pays.

Sounds like typical political bs. Like when a politician points to eliminating this and that for a few million, or .046 % of the budget. But when you mention something which affects their State like blue salamander research, it becomes "whoa, whoa, not so fast."

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder where we would be headed without a STF. Where we are headed without him.

RE: cheerleading update
It is sad to see NIU and other Illinois state supported universities facing such austerity. It has happened before, during my sophomore year at NIU the school was so short of money that they could not afford band uniforms. They went through a football season without a band that year and a recording of the national anthem was played before the football games. Cheerleaders and marching bands contribute to a quality game day experience. Going without either will have a negative impact on attendance and the program as a whole.

Come on Illinois get your act together!

Illinois will never get its act together. It is run by politicians who serve their self-interests. The only way to get rid of crooked morons like Madigan is death. But, then again, I'm sure he has his successor already lined up. He has power over the whole state, yet is elected by a tiny number in his district.

Rauner is the one who doesn't want to fund public schools or higher education. There will not be a budget as long as getting rid of collective bargaining is a part of the deal! Giving up collective bargaining would be like giving up your right to vote.

I think Silverettes are part of the band.

The whole scenario makes one wonder. The cheerleaders are around summers for festivals, competitions when needed and self-raise money to fund any trips they are lucky enough to attend. That's why they have split the pot and are selling programs. They interact with the younger kids who do remember. Besides basketball and football, they spend a lot of time going to events very few attend, such as volleyball and wrestling. And if you ask anyone on either of those teams, they are appreciative. Cutting them back (which they already have) or cutting them out, makes little sense. They are thrown bones in relation to full student athletes (like far corner comp football/basketball tickets) and I'm thinking they're not even worried about that.

I think the Silverettes are part of the Music dept.; independent of the cheerleaders.

Oops! Now I notice kflyer just said that.

Does NIU count cheerleading as a sport, as some other schools do?

Do we need to start a gofundme page for each area.

This is pissing me off. Before they get rid of the cheerleaders, I would strongly consider channeling some of my HAF donation to the cheerleaders.

Agree, Dog Fan, they are just taking away from the game day experience, not adding to it... wrong direction

I think it was on the main MAC board, someone mentioned they might be referring to competitive cheerleading, where they travel around the country for cheerleading competitions. I don't know if that's what they're talking about, but it would make more sense then.

Doesn't the 50/50 ticket proceeds go to the cheerleaders?

So if no cheerleaders then no need for the 50/50 raffle.

First thing first, this article is so piss-poor it's not worth reading. Wrestling at NIU goes back way beyond 1969-70 and those lettermen lists are probably related more to verifiable records than anything. This Jesse Severson isn't from here and proves he does no research or have any background knowledge whenever he writes about local high schools or NIU. All of you who hate Mike Korcek and continue to do so, but if this guy had just contacted Korcek or any number of long-time Huskie supporters in town, they could have told him differently.

At one point in the article, he writes: "Cheerleading is not included in the 17 athletic programs; and while they are self-funded" they receive "some money" for apparel. Whatever the hell "some money" is, it's a drop in the bucket when it comes to athletics being "self-sustaining." Severson should read the Dog Pound, then he wouldn't type crap like "only baseball has been disbanded in recent memory." NIU's men's gymnastics program has been discussed on here for having had entire teams compete in NCAA Championships not to mention a long list of individual event national champions and All-Americas. The Daily Chronicle sports has become nothing more than a glorified blog written by people who don't bother to get to know anyone or do any real work. Any of you remember Bobby Narang (before he became a Tribune prep specialist), he'd do two if not three stories for the Sunday morning edition after a Saturday home or away game. NIU had a national championship in men's cross country, Olympic competitors in men's track, a national championship in badminton, something like a 36-match unbeaten streak in field hockey, national meet qualifiers in women's swimming. There's a whole history of financial and political reasons that various sports have come and gone. Until Title IX is taken out of the mix, the imbalance because of football scholarships makes it impossible. Drop men's tennis, and you're probably talking about only four scholarships because chances are only one person is getting a full, the next two best players are getting half rides, and then others are getting a third or maybe even only a fourth, same goes for men's golf or soccer, wrestling, and baseball.

Bravo...to add soccer has got to go sorry. Too much money and not many MAC schools in it. B12 doesn't have it. They are better off being club.

NIU needs to cut their way out of this 10% across the board.
