NMSU President sends Conference Survey to Faculty and Staff
http://www.lcsun-news.com/story/sports/c.../83937868/

New Mexico State president Garrey Carruthers sent out a short survey for faculty and staff members regarding New Mexico State's conference future.

•NMSU should remain in the WAC for non-football sports and play independent FBS football after our agreement with the Sun Belt Conference expires in 2018.
•NMSU should join the Horizon Conference for non-football sports and play independent FBS football after our agreement with the Sun Belt Conference expires in 2018.
•NMSU should align with the Big Sky Conference, move all of our sports to this conference, and enjoy FCS football.
•None of the above.

Why would the Horizon League even be on there? The Summit, maybe, but that's still a stretch for them too.

So the Horizon is the other unnamed conference.

That is a head scratcher, considering that this is the current Horizon League footprint:

It is weird. I'm thinking the WAC is on life support so I understand why NM St would be looking for another conference home. Two questions:
1. Is the Horizon the only other conference besides Big Sky that will take NM St?
2. Why would the Horizon want a school so far away from their footprint?

Cheers!

Good program. And NMSU was in the MVC in the 70s with a similar footprint (W. Texas and Tulsa did bridge the gap a little).

It's all a PR ruse and posters just don't get that.

NMSU will stay in the WAC for FBS with their Big Sky FBS invitees. The rest of the WAC will go to the Big Sky.

Just a giant swap of schools between leagues that have been planning for 2018.

The Horizon was probably fine with using their name, as both view it as mutually preposterous.

The Southland and Summit were likely interested, but NMSU was not, so their names weren't included.

The answer he is looking for is the Big SKY schools in the WAC FBS tent.

I wouldn't be surprised if the SLC would have said, "Thanks, but no thanks." unless New Mexico State agreed to bring every sport, including football, into the conference. Historically, that has been the stance taken for every member in that position except ULM for a few years.

Excuse me for venting a little.

The Big West not having any interest in bringing back a former member with good basketball is frustrating. No reason why it shouldn't be listed with the Horizon.

This is a smart play by NMSU administration.

Put out a survey where students and faculty vote a likely yes on a move down to FCS.

Make the results public. If a move to a conference doesnt come within the next year announce a drop down.

Idaho should have taken the same approach but they may have been under pressure by the Big Sky to put up or shut up.

I suspect the Big West would expect NMSU to pay the travel subsidy, and football placement would still be a costly issue, too?

I don't disagree, though. Big West really needs to have a heart-to-heart with some of its members who need this money to travel. Maybe there are some in there who should rethink their D1 existence. The fact that all of them sit closer to, if not well into or over nine-digit endowments, they can do away with this nonsense. Sorry Fullerton and Long Beach...deal or get lost.

How about 1,465 reasons it shouldn't be listed with the Horizon...and that's UIC being the closest potential rival! 1,756 reasons if you're heading to Youngstown State, the furthest potential rival!

North Texas also was there, and I believe UTA as well. Houston was a member of the MVC as well.

UTA wasn't. Houston had already left.

Just announced we are going to be Indy following the 2018 season. So looks like the choices are staying in a WAC that is ready to crumble or join the Horizon.
