LA Tech update: House Bill 971 to be heard by House Education Committee tomorrow
House Bill 971 is scheduled to be heard during the next House Committee on Education meeting tomorrow, May 4th, 2016 at 9 AM.

As reported on previously by our website on April 5th, House Bill 971 as proposed “would prohibit ‘athletic programs at public postsecondary institutions that receive state general fund monies from traveling more than 375 miles for athletic competitions.'” The bill also provides exemptions for all football programs, basketball programs, and all LSU institutions.

This bill should not even make it out of committee.

Never under estimate the stupidity of a Louisiana legislature. Give enough free crawfish boils, king cakes, Saints tickets, and beer and whiskey to the right people and you can get whatever you want done with government money.

So if La Tech earned an invite to the Fiesta Bowl, they couldn't attend? Absurd law.

Football is exempt under the law, so they could go to the Fiesta Bowl. This affects sports other than football, men's basketball, and women's basketball.

I'll try to post a link to the video feed once I find it posted. Edit: http://www.legis.la.gov/legis/video.aspx?roomid=101

Again if this law passes... (and it wouldn't surprise me if La Legislators are dumb enough to do it)..

Bye-bye La Tech.. you're either all sports or NO sports in C-USA, remember?

Don't forget the right to obtain LSU football tickets.

LT brings good football and basketball. No way would C-USA do anything but make travel adjustments for the minor sports.

Football and basketball are exempted under the proposal.

How you going to make exemptions when the majority of teams are completely out of the zone?

Well, let's see... from LA tech to MTSU = 588 miles.. so can't go there.
LA Tech to UTSA -= 480 miles... so can't go there.

386 miles to UAB.
306 miles to Rice.
208 miles to USM.
291 miles to UNT.

That's it within the range.. and you want the entire C-USA to make travel adjustments for one school versus 9 others?

No Baseball, no Olympic sports, no Golf, No Tennis, no... uhm... what other sports am I forgetting right off my head?

Carter: "I've brought controversial bills before, but not this controversial."

Carter citing an article from The Advocate on April 6 regarding athletic department revenues and spending.

Carter: "UNO and UL do not use state General Fund money."

Carter is going to "voluntarily defer the bill so he doesn't get shot in the back."

It appears from discussion that conference travel in non-football and non-basketball sports would not be restricted.

HB 971 has been deferred.

Gotta make the Louisiana taxpayers proud to know that politicians' sports agendas are occupying the time of their legislators when they could be discussing actual state budgets and programs to try to achieve more efficient government.

How truly embarrassing (and sad) for my home state. Geaux Tiggaaaaahhhs!

I think his point was there are far bigger items on the state's budget they should be looking at instead of university sports travel.
