It'll be done again. The MW will just raid them again and then the WAC will not be a football conference (FBS) once again.

The MW should tread carefully also. Boise's national tv bonus deal with ESPN will have to be adjusted if the conference is to stay together. Unequal revenue sharing can only be accepted for so long.

BSU deal brings more for them than without them. Otherwise they would only have CBS sports network.

Plus, they could get snatch up by a P5 conference because of their appeal of having a separate contract that is more than other G5 schools.

A regional school getting into the P5 in a low population state.
They don't have a long enough history to survive a downturn.
Utah or TCU could have struggled joining the P5 and been fine.
What options are out there for Boise to leave the MWC?
The AAC is about it and that is a stretch.

Fullerton will soon step in and propose an FBS WAC and an FCS Big Sky. Even though the Presidents of those U's have known that is a solution for more than four years, they will feign an awe shucks moment and begin getting campus and alumni support for the changes.

Fullerton will go out in style before July 1st at age 67 with the announcement of an eventual reconfigured FBS WAC of some Big Sky schools and NMSU.

Wait - I thought it was going to be a dual FBS / FCS Big Sky with special permission from the NCAA?!?

So confused ....

The WAC and Big Sky will still be loosely associated as brother conferences, but the WAC will not need special FBS granting status from the NCAA. The WAC already has it. A massive swap of teams is coming between the two conferences.

Keep dreaming.

If the Big Sky schools couldn't afford FBS before the P5 autonomy, they aren't going to be able to afford it now when it is even much more expensive with the new benefits the school has to provide to be competitive at the FBS level.

The WAC is doomed as a FBS conference. It will not have any CFP money or TV exposure or revenue. There has never been enough teams in the West to have 3 FBS conferences of 12 or larger.

It has a bright future as a FCS conference though.

A lot of D2 schools from the rockies to the west coast are making plans. Some already added sports like men and women's LAX. Several schools are upgrading their facilities including their football stadium and basketball facilities. Alaska-Fairbanks might be the only school in Alaska high enough to offer sports while Anchorage could fold their sports. Fairbanks might be able to start FCOAs for hockey and basketball at the D1 level.
East Bay State, Western Washington and some other west coast schools at D2 could restart their football program. Montana State-Billings are getting donations rolling in the restart their football program.
Azusa Pacific seems to have very nice facilities than several D1 schools right now.
GNAC might be also involved in this as well. They are a hybrid of football and non-football schools. GNAC could be the new west coast non-football conference. D1 could try a test program with Simon Fraser. They could play some of their home games against the PAC 12 schools at the CFL franchise stadium.

The CFP situation would only be temporary - the contract expires after the 2025 regular season, and that's assuming the drumbeat for an 8-team playoff isn't too big to ignore.

Growth in bowls may not be what it once was, but there is still demand in excess of supply. This now allows for 3 combinations (Pac-MW, Pac-WAC, MW-WAC) from the purely western conferences, and the Big 10 and Big 12 will still have some western ties as well.

I would have some concern about the next CFP contract given the TV ratings so far, but I still think the G5/G6 will be far ahead of where they were in the BCS era.

Cal-Davis's peers are the PAC 12 schools.

I just dont think it is just Big Sky schools that can help out. The 4 Dakotas, Northern Iowa, Montana, Montana State, Missouri State, Illinois State and Wichita State could help the Big 10 and Big 12 out. As it is North Dakota State will be visiting Oregon in a few years. This could get National coverage as the game of the week. If North Dakota State upsets the Ducks? Than you would have an argument that some of the FCS schools actually belong to the FBS.

The WAC/ Big Sky would immediately get the Potato Bowl rather than the MAC, a Vikings Stadium bowl vs the MAC, a Seattle Bowl, and possibly a Frisco TX or Austin or San Marcos Bowl vs the Belt or CUSA.

The CFP money will come in 2025.

The west now includes the Dakotas, which are now stepping into their own. The Montanas are in many ways more capable than Idaho, NMSU, Wyoming or SJSU. UND has built $250 mill in athletic facilities just in the past 15 years, so we're not a little DII school anymore

I've thought from the beginning that the Fullerton dual FBS/FCS Big Sky with special permission from the NCAA was pure fantasy. I also don't see the Big Sky entering into a deal with the WAC to hand over its top programs to another conference. Realignment doesn't work that way.

However it wouldn't shock me if, over time, some Big Sky and MVFC schools begin to think that moving up to play football as an FBS independent -- by accepting an invitation to put their non-football sports in the WAC, thereby qualifying themselves to undergo the FBS transition process -- could be more financially attractive than remaining on the FCS level. The payouts from body bag games would be a lot higher, and as independents they wouldn't be obligated to pay FCOA. And with BYU, UMass and now NMSU having joined the independent ranks, late-season scheduling wouldn't be so tough.

I'm not saying it's likely but I think it's a lot more plausible than a "massive swap of teams" between the Big Sky and WAC.

Lets throw in Lamar, UTRGV, Sam Houston State, McNeese State, SFA, North Alabama, Jacksonville State, Eastern Kentucky, some CAA schools, and Liberty to the mixed. I would not be surprise West Texas A&M go in as well since they are building an on campus stadium that could seat by expanding to 22,000. That is way too much for a D2 program. I think they are gunning for D1 again.
