Denver Women's Lacrosse leaves MPSF, joins Big East as affiliate member
The Denver Men's Lacrosse team (reigning NCAA champs) has been in the Big East since 2013 and now the DU women's lax program will join the Big East as an affiliate member:

This is a good move for DU since the MPSF is losing the PAC-12 schools.

Denver has been an extremely valuable member to the Big East in Lacrosse. Glad to see another team falling under the banner as well.

The Pioneers would love to be in the Big East for any sport that will take us. DU is an eastern-style private that happens to be in a western location.

The Big East will be losing its AAC and SEC lax members, so it has to pull in others before the split. Was predicted in another thread that BE women's lax would split.

Who does the MPSF backfill with? Colorado State is said to be coming, but that leaves them one short of six.

I considered DU for college, but couldn't afford it (ended up at Metro though I lived in apartment 1 block off the DU campus for a year at Evans and University).
Yeah, I think your assessment is pretty accurate.

MPSF has a two year grace period starting with the 2017-18 academic year (Spring 2018 lacrosse season). So as long as the MPSF finds two more members by June 30, 2019, they are good.
I would watch out for the CAA having to take them in as affiliates, especially if any of their football-playing schools depart, as both James Madison and Delaware sponsor the sport.
Also, since the Atlantic Sun currently has eight members in the sport, the MPSF could approach Central Michigan and Detroit Mercy. If they play a single round-robin, the Michigan schools have one weekend hosting California schools and one weekend playing at California schools. Of course this will be moot if Colorado State and one other school join, in which case we could be talking about Mountain West women's lacrosse.
Is the AAC adding anyone from within their own ranks?

that was just speculation on a thread here. Has it been suggested any where else?

I've only seen it as speculation on SB Nation.
There's a certain sense to the two SEC schools deciding they would rather be in a six team conference than a ten team conference, and once its 4 Big East schools (with Butler) and 4 AAC schools (with ECU), they are in the position to choose which one that will be.
If it was just the basis of that kind of speculation, "The Big East will be losing its AAC and SEC Lax members" might be more precisely phrased as "The Big East might be losing its AAC and SEC Lax members."
To me, its this present news, that the Big East is inviting Denver, is the actual real world evidence that strongly suggests there is something to that speculation, because if 10 is awkward for Lacrosse, 11 is really awkward.

we don't know that ECU will be invited to the BE. They said they WANT to be with their fellow AAC members, that doesn't mean they will be. UConn and Cincy are going to the B12 anyway, so why would the AAC want to sponsor a sport where 4/6 members are affiliates?
