"minimum of 16 varsity sports, with the minimum of six varsity sports for men and a minimum of eight varsity sports for women..."

When did logic completely fly out the window?

NIU would be just fine without wrestling or baseball if it had to, but ditching say Women's Cross Country would have less of a reverberation on the program and university. I didn't know we had it until I glanced at NIUHuskies.com

Who is on this task force?

It seems they do not understand that 16 D1 sports are required by the NCAA to be considered a D1 school?

Technically we have 17 sports offered but really its made up of 16 teams. The 17th is the difference between Indoor and Outdoor Women's track.

That being said with the budget issues I do believe that NIU athletics should cut funding within the administration first but also the cheerleaders and a 17th sport in order to save some money but more importantly keep public support of NIU's D1 status. Also this one sport being cut cannot be a required sport of the AAC or B12.

Pretty sure it's only 14. Either 7 & 7 or 6m, 8w

This B12 document says that the NCAA FBS requirement is 16.

"As an obligation of membership in the Conference, each Member Institution shall meet NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision membership requirements, which includes sponsoring a minimum of 16 varsity sports, with the minimum of six varsity sports for men and a minimum of eight varsity sports for women."

http://www.big12sports.com/fls/10410/pdf...M_ID=10410

That's the info I've read too. Currently NIU offers 17 programs. If we cut two sports we'll need to drop out of FBS.

Ditching XC would only save money on travel/hotels as the XC coaches also coach For the Indoor and Outdoor track teams.

Zero chance that Frazier cuts anything before the B12 makes its next expansion move.

Things I wish JP would have done but just talked about, Cut men's soccer tomorrow. Nobody goes and they can be a club team. Plus it wont affect women's scholarships on the other side or a conference move.

The baseball field is on prime parking location. Should be looked at to get cut. You can always restart a baseball program very quickly specifically if we go to a bigger conference.

The fact that the task force even considered cutting cheerleaders is one of the dumbest things I have heard in a long time. Zero scholarships and the cost is next to nothing. What is next cut the band?

Does anyone know who is on this august task force? Sounds to me like they are a bunch of leftist, anti-sport academicians who got their panties in a knot because their departments could use more money to offer meaningless courses. Is there a task force to recommend cutting meaningless courses that have low attendance?

Did anyone catch the HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel about the Arms Race in athletics? It touched on both Rutgers and EMU. It does put in perspective just how much money is spent on athletics at division 1 universities, and wow it's obscene lol. Anyway, I recommend it.

This would not be the first time an athletic program was cut. Ask Dr. Kieso about how they cut the mens gymnastic program in the late 1980's

We had a pretty good men's gymnastic team in the 80s. The meet against the Soviet Union Junior team was very exciting and interesting. Russia had a very talented team but Chick Evans field house was packed and rocking.

Also in 1986 (maybe 1987) when the Japanese Men's team came and competed at Chick Evans. They brought Koji Gushiken (1984 Olympic All Around Champion) and I was able to get a picture with him and get his autograph,

It was only 1 or 2 years later they eliminated the program even though it was generating revenue through events like competition with the Soviet and Japanese teams.

I never followed gymnastics but that seemed quite a blow to cut a program that was performing so well.
