The three universities that spend the most on athletic in terms of raw dollars and have the biggest subsidies are those who play in Division 1, the top football division of the NCAA. Central Michigan has a $28.5-million budget, with $19.4 million coming from the general fund; Western Michigan has a $33.2-million budget, with $25.8 million coming from the general fund, and Eastern has a $33.9-million budget, with $27.8 million coming from the general fund.

I'm awaiting a HBO Special that students and faculty think that WMU should drop FBS football because they can't afford it.

Two million dollar difference (between the difference in general fund contributions between EMU and WMU is a little more than rounding error. Easily less than 1% of the annual total general fund).

Basically if our FB team won more we might increase revenues by say a million or two and we'd be the 'WMU of the east (ern part of MI).

The difference is mostly that we have Bunsis and WMU has P.J. Fleck. Bunsis gets on HBO and Fleck gets on ESPN in bowl games.

Another difference: student and alumni apathy levels

Yeah I'm sure WMU posters continue to leer at EMU. But some other differences I believe that EMU offers more total sports combined than either CMU or WMU. The difference between WMU and EMU is even more stunning when you consider that WMU's football attendance is better than EMUs. Why doesn't ESPN find a married WMU commuter student with 2 kids and ask her what she thinks about PJ"s salary? "Well then I want to be football coach".

Can they interview Bunsis again, now that Lyke and the board have told him to go *uck himself. I would love to see that interview. 03-lmfao

I'm guessing here but I bet all of the Michigan public universities have used public funds or a combination of private/public to build their stadiums, arenas and other athletic facilities. I'm glad HBO has their microscope on public funding of college sports or they would miss the $440 million of taxpayer funds used to build the Red Wings arena:

I doubt the good professor commented on this.

Likewise maybe HBO should do more specials on how professional sports receive all sorts of taxpayer subsidies for stadiums ball parks etc. Makes EMU look like pocket change.

Or when we talk about student tuition and public funding of education here's something to keep in mind for future DECADES:

I'm sure the professor once he gets of his version of football's Gilligan's Island will write his legislator about this. Yeah right.

EMU BADLY (!!) needs to have the MBB's team go to the NCAAs or FB to win say 7 games.

I remember the pride and publicity when EMU had success twenty years ago (or more) in MBB and also FB (1987).

Winning REALLY does solve a lot of things...

Let's try wining BIG and see the reaction.

BTW, I don't believe those numbers. Are they apples and apples or apples and oranges?

We're at 33M and Oakland is at 8M.

Sure we have more sports, but even making an allowance for that, are we spending 20M (!!!!) on FB? I doubt that!!!

I'd love to see how they (and us) expense scholarships. How many and how much per full scholarship.

One other point I wanted to make but think I neglected to:

Let's say a school like EMU drops athletics COMPLETELY. That's a minus 500 student-athletes.

Drop 500 students from EMU and that is a crisis in the classrooms. Cutting the number of classes and faculty positions is never an easy thing to do.

If a class goes from 18 to 15 students (without 3 student athletes), what is saved? Nothing.

Same as it is with the EMU budget, everything is off because of bogus 'projections.'

The final quote pretty much says it all:

"The truth is, these are mostly political development programs, not economic development programs"
