The B1G reminds me of the Cubs, even when we're losing people still care
http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/foxs-spl...-deal.html

Although I've not seen final confirmation of the Quarter of a Billion Dollar per year deal with Fox and the B1G for 25 Football and 50 Basketball games. The shear magnitude of the number took many by surprise given how the Cord Cutting Phenomena has dug into the revenue model of cable companies.

It doesn't hurt that Ohio State won the National Championship last year in 2014 but seriously the league hasn't been the most competitive as far as the National Championship race other than Ohio State since what... the late 1990s? And if you want to go to DOMINANCE of the league, you'd have to dig into the early to mid 1900s. So Why would the league command such a number? I have a theory that goes something like this...

The schools are friggin enormous and have been cranking out highly qualified well educated grads for decades. The Economy in the Midwest has sucked probably since the 70s so in order to find work said highly qualified B1G grads have found work all over the country, but stay loyal to their alma mater and their conference. So moreso than any other conference the B1G has far more alumni and residual fans outside of their footprint leading to a consistenly high level of ratings both inside and outside of the footprint.

In a nutshell the B1G is like the Cubs. The Cubs are always a good draw. When they are winning they are an amazing draw but Cubs fans are loyal and will show up to Wrigley if for no other reason than tradition and fun day at the ballpark. But getting back to the number 1.5 * 10^9 over 6 years.

That's a pretty large amount of loot and is per the article I linked above reminiscent of the NFL deal Fox pulled off to get Big Fox out of the shadows. I imagine they are planning on the B1G and their huge alumni bases spread all around the country to do the same for FS1 and maybe FS2.

I think with the recent influx of team building coaches with a proven track record we will soon be a very top heavy league again, screwing us out of the CFP hunt with the top teams losing to one another or being upset by Northwestern or Minnesota.

The B1G is getting better, a lot better. Just finished the NFL Draft today with the most draftees the conference has had in the 7 round draft era. And Harbaugh is just getting started at Michigan.

The gap between the B1G and the SEC is closing. Soon the B1G will lead in TV revenue. With more TV revenue, more money can be invested into the athletic programs, which in turn lead to better facilities, more competitive bidding or salaries for elite coaches, etc, etc, etc.

Delany wants to get as much OTA as possible. Eventually I see an NFL style of broadcasting when the next contract comes due in six years. This FOX deal is the first step.

The main thing we need to do IMO is win out of conference games. If we do that it wont matter that we are top heavy.

I don't think money is the reason the Big Ten is behind the SEC in football. They've always made similar amounts of money as the SEC. Now they'll just be making even more money but still spend it on athletics and whatever else. The Big Ten cares significantly more about it's academic reputation than the SEC schools generally do and will reinvest money into those programs just as willingly as the athletics so I don't know how much I would expect the Big Ten to close the gap athletically (i.e., football).

I agree with many of the points noted. What's interesting to me is kind of like when the B1G / ACC Challenge started ACC fans lived for significance through men's basketball but it was like meh it's just another thing we do in the B1G.

ACC was ahead and won in the beginning but we've swept up pretty good for almost 10 years running. When the challenge first started it was like people thought ACC was arguably top MBB along with Big East. It's much harder to even propose that when they haven't won the challenge in this decade; at worst we're a formidable competitor with some level of respect.

The point I'm making is that once B1G focused and made it somewhat relevant we've certainly become a part of the discussion for which is best conference for MBB.

I believe that the same thing is happening in football. Again in B1G we typically have a whole lot of stuff on our plate-- academically, research, and supporting athletic teams (pro AND college).

So it's only lately when ESPN has propped up SEC as the other planet level football conference that we along with other conferences are going let's decide on field; especially when all SEC seems to focus on is college football 365.

Just like our B1G / ACC challenge it took a few years to show that we could argue about definition of Best Conference in MBB.

B1G won 1st ever CFP, and even though my Spartans got skunked in this year's CFP let's just keep lining up and see if SEC can win like they did in BCS era; now that we're a bit more interested in joining the discussion around football.
