Tony Mercurio-what is his problem?
OK-I know it stinks to get fired by ODU after broadcasting Lady Monarch games for over a decade, but some 4 years later Mercurio is STILL holding a grudge. If you look at his posts on Facebook he is calling for ODU to step back down to the FCS level (as Idaho has done) and keeps banging the drum for the University to add softball to the athletic program. Is this just a feeble effort to try and stir the pot and get attention or does he actually believe his own hot air?

Yes it is just a feeble attempt to garner attention. ODU is planning to add softball (last I heard), but that might be out the window if he got his "wish" of ODU dropping back to FCS as there would be less Title IX pressure due to cutting back of men's scholarships. I wouldn't pay him any mind.

I don't like him either, but he can have an opinion and to be fair it has been consistent.

Never heard of the guy. Must make him feel even worse that his opinion doesn't matter to me.

Followed him for a while but could not stand his attitude. Why should we drop down? Makes no sense.

TM is not worth your time to listen to unless you like facts about 70s baseball teams.

The bottom line is he seeks attention. He craves the antagonistic roll and enjoys slamming ODU every chance he can. I believe a lot of what he says is "stick", at least I hope so. No one could be as hateful and bitter as he comes across, when he talks about ODU. But if you need to find out the latest and best about the Steak & Shakes in St. Louis, MO. he is your man.
His bitterness started when Wendy Larry was dismissed. But all in all I'm so glade he is gone.

Tony Mercurio-what is his problem?
Back when I was a kid, mercurio went into the local 7 eleven in Portsmouth, bought the ledger star, threw away the entire newspaper except the sports page and the tv green sheet. I know, showing my age but also his complete ignorance.

A few years ago, I was at Moe's in VB ordering a burrito when Tony walks in to set up his satellite broadcast. I overheard one of the employees say "oh no, we're gonna run out of food"...

RE: Tony Mercurio-what is his problem?
I remember when the news broke that ODU was heading to CUSA and FBS, and boy, was Mercurio PISSED. You could tell that for all the bluster about being the leading, nay, ONLY source for ODU news, he had been completely broadsided by the move. He was pissed about the impact on women's basketball (himself) and was dismissive about football (my guess is that stems from his not being included in the radio station's ODU football coverage). I don't know what pissed him off more, that he wouldn't get to go to JMU every year or that he was exposed as someone who really didn't know the score (as it were).
People nostalgic for Mercurio -- or at least someone who isn't Cattles -- have said that he cared about ODU, but in reality, he cared about Tony Mercurio. He rarely talked about ODU men's basketball until WGH got their contract. The Tides might as well have been the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes until, again, WGH got the contract. And the Admirals barely rated mentions even in the midst of their 28-game winning streak.

RE: Tony Mercurio-what is his problem?
Tony cares about Tony and pretty much nothing else. He's just a gross, bitter person who wants to draw attention to himself in any way possible. He used to talk up the Lady Monarchs a lot when they were good, but he couldn't care less now. He seemed to support the men when Odell and Joe Bunn were on the team and they would talk about pro wrestling, but then that stopped as well. If he wasn't such a jerk I'd feel sorry for him. He does have an outlet and the remnants of an audience though, so its a bit of a bummer he trashes the Monarchs any chance he gets.

he was a horrible broadcaster for the Lady's team. Doug Ripley is so much better.

I flushed a Mercurio down the toilet just this afternoon. It stunk, was completely made of crap, and I had to spray the area and wash my hands afterwards. "nuff said.

Went to his Facebook the last time he was brought up on this page. You would think this man is paid to hate ODU as every post he has is talking some sort of s*** about the school. The more and more I read the more I remembered what some of the wiser posters on this board have said whenever he gets brought up. He's not worth the energy to get angry about. And I'm much happier knowing I'll never visit his page again!

The answer to OPs question is grandiose delusions brought on by acid reflux, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

RE: Tony Mercurio-what is his problem?
Way back when, I was at the 4400 club on Hampton Blvd., talking to one of tm's employees/interns . He said Tony was a complete a## and impossible to work for. Back when he was at 1310, his policy was to trash anything his station did not carry and competing stations did. That hasn't changed. About the only positive thing I can say about him is that he does talk local sports. Listening to his former station now is unbearable. Unless you like the NFL network on radio. All nfl,all the time. Its a joke.
I give Tony an F , Cattles a D- .
