It takes some time for pitchers to build up strength so by the end of the year you don't have fatigued arms at the time you need them most. Tech's coach had said those midweek games were more important to him at the time we played the first game, but I know most coaches feel the weekend games are where they focus. I'm not saying he's wrong, just that it seems to be a plan designed to make a splash.
I'm sure that is true once conference play begins. However, in this instance, there were still 12 OOCs to play between the Cajuns game and conference play.
The point was avoiding a high pitch count early in the season due to the cumulative wear and tear on the arm during the season to avoid tired arms and additional risk of injury near the end of the year. As I said, this is only Coach Robichaux's opinion, but his is usually a pretty good opinion.

Certainly if one is to let coaches be the judge, Robe would be the one who has decades of real experience/expertise and ethics whose decision should count. And by a very long shot indeed.
But again, he would also be in the solid majority of those who care about the players and the sport.

It's not that 145 pitches in a game equals injury, so it is irrelevant that he played five games later. It is the cumulative wear of many games. Overhand throwing is not a natural human motion and therefore requires extensive attention and stamina build-up.
I know nothing about your pitcher or situation. But I can tell you 145 pitches in February is considered excessive by most coaches.
