Arizona State will join the NCHC for hockey
College Hockey News is reporting that Ariz St will join the NCHC.

A lot of talk here that Ariz St was a lock for the Big Ten was wrong.

See Bowling Green being the 10th team, but there are rumors among Gopher fans still that UND will be invited to the Big Ten hockey affiliation.

So both leagues need to get off the odd number of teams now

He had to get it right sometime. His first prediction was ASU to the Big 10. Then when it became clear that wasn't happening he said that wasn't from his main source-it was WHCA.

Could see another PAC12 school or UNLV, but that would make Miami and W Mich very jumpy.

Coyotes just bought the Springfield MA AHL team, moving it to Tucson.

Could see a double team up of Coyotes/College Hockey here in AZ.

I'd much rather see the Big Ten add North Dakota for #8 than Arizona State. Frankly, it's also the smarter move given what's needed is more competitive depth and not southwestern markets.

This reminds me: did Notre Dame really join the B1G* and this forum didn't have a 38 page thread discussing it?

*Yes, just in one sport but "Notre Dame to the B1G" is possibly the single most popular realignment topic. And I don't think we even got a troll "Notre Dame to the B1G!!1!" thread out of...Notre Dame actually joining the B1G. (I'm searching thread titles for "Notre" and getting bupkis for hockey threads.) Isn't Knute Rockne's ghost supposed to smite South Bend if this happens, even in one sport?

Unless if they setup an interlocking schedule so that the team with the "bye" from Big Ten conference play has a series against a team with the "bye" from the NCHC. For example:

Miami (OH) vs. Ohio State
Western Michigan vs. Michigan
Omaha vs. Michigan State
Denver vs. Wisconsin
North Dakota vs. Notre Dame
Saint Cloud State vs. Minnesota
Arizona State vs. Penn State

Thanks, gosports1, for bumping the "ND to the B1G" thread I couldn't find for some reason.

Minnesota already plays their DII instate opponents in a tournament, but that is a mini lovefest. What really gets the Gopher blood going is when they oppose UND.

Just a couple years ago, Dinkytown, which is commercial student district near the UMinn campus, had riots after the Gophers beat UND in a Frozen Four semifinal. The Gophers lost in the finals, but the win over UND was what they wanted badly.

RE: Arizona State will join the NCHC for hockey
Totally makes sense to me for Arizona State to go to NCHC as opposed to the B1G on both sides. Better hockey being played at present in the NCHC. More proximity to NCHC.

On the B1G side... we rarely give out affiliate membership so to have a very distant program that would most assuredly leave if a Western league like the Pac-12 ever started up made them less attractive. Besides the league is already spread out far enough ... we need more bus drive schools.
Additionally apart from the recent addition of Notre Dame there always remains the possibility of other league schools ramping up to the majors.
If we add any affiliates you heard it hear folks... look out for North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth. It would give you 4 former WCHA and 4 CCHA schools plus a Penn State program that packs in 6000 no matter the opponent.
But first things first... Let's start winning some friggin games.

What would happen when Alaska-Anchorage winds up dropping all sports? That includes the men's hockey.

If a tree drops in the forest, does it make a sound?

Hockey is an exception ... Knute Rockne's ghost can't skate, so the hockey team is safe.
