UC Readies for Record Breaking Commencement
6,400 diplomas to 6,351 graduates this Spring. That's up at least a grand from when I graduated back in the mid 90s.

On a related note, I read Ono tweet that applicants for next year are up 17% from last year. Good to see the school continues to increase its enrollment each year. I was afraid our fall to the AAC would result in a decline.

RE: UC Readies for Record Breaking Commencement
You thought that an 18-year-old...someone who was 10 and 11 during the glory big east days...wouldn't want to attend a university where they'd be spending 10's of thousands of dollars and gaining a lifetime's worth of education and career-readiness, because now the football team is playing tulsa and tulane instead of west virginia and louisville? I'm going to assume you are joking.

The only folks who really give a rip about our conference are message board superfans like us. Most people really dont know/care about that sort of thing.

I think most would agree that getting into the the Big East had a positive impact on enrollment...so I think it's reasonable for CliftonAve to worry that being relegated to the AAC might have a negative impact on enrollment.

But it seems like UC has really made a name for itself academically...Which I am much more proud of than the fact that I got to go to the Orange and Sugar bowls while a student at UC.

I have to agree. UC has undergone a cultural shift that should endure regardless of on field opponents. Strong academics, a real campus life for students and a unique environment for college football six or seven days a year should all offset the conference concerns most of us on these boards worry about.

I guess this is a good thing but a record numbers of graduates at commencement sorta cuts both ways. I don't find it to be a particularly strong selling point.

^^ True. Once you start getting in this range there is always the perception that you are nothing more than a "diploma mill". UC took a hit in the last USNWR rankings because they accepted 76% of its applicants (the prior year they only accepted ~63%). I think there can be some balance there were you have a large enrollment and yet be selective in your admissions. Sounds like UC needs to keep working on that.

USNWR rankings are meaningless. Maybe we should accept 0% next year and go all the way to #1.

UC is quickly approaching a ceiling for undergraduate capacity on the Uptown Campus because of physical limitations such as housing and classroom space. There was a study about a decade ago on excess capacity of campus buildings. Capacity does exist, but only in certain time frames. The problem with that is, faculty don't want to teach at say 7:00 a.m. or 5:00 p.m. and students won't register for classes at those hours anyway.

I suspect the plan is to reach an enrollment ceiling and use that as leverage to toughen admission standards going forward. That's one way to raise the bar.

I've been hearing UC is nearing capacity with undergrads on the main campus since the mid 1990's.

They somehow keep packing more into that same 400 acre square campus, however.

Housing surrounding campus certainly has ramped up in the past few years.
