In all fairness, he also insisted as recently as March that Pastner was the man for the job.

Thankfully, he's an alum that seems to support the University regardless.

That's ironic considering DJ is one of the lowest ranked recruits in the history of the program and I dont even know why I said ranked, nobody had a clue who he was.

Ironic? Your post rhymes with ironic and I'm trying to figure out why I would even respond to it. DJ is a freak athlete who played his heart out in a Tiger uniform, was a great teammate and truly exciting to watch. He was an Army brat and if you understood what that means, well you might have a hint why he was somewhat over looked as to the inability to participate in AAU etc to the level so many others do. Yes he was a tweener but we haven't seen hops on a Tiger team like that since Michael Wilson. Why knock Tiger players who represented this team, university and city the way DJ did? Time to add yes, yet another to "Ye ole ignore a poster" file.

That wasn't a knock. Everything he said was true. DJ was not on anyone's radar, but he turned out to be a truly special player.

Don't understand why you read that as a dig against DJ. The post was clearly meant to show that rankings aren't everything.

Yeah but you remember, this board is awesome at the art of over-reaction and over-sensitivity

Yeah I wasn't knocking him at all. My point was that all these crazy fans are already yelling about Tubby not getting high ranked recruits when the most popular Tiger player in the Josh Pastner era was literally not ranked and nobody had ever heard of him. People were mad that Josh gave DJ a shot and nobody should pretend they weren't. So why dont all you yahoos wait to see what kinda guys Tubby brings in. He obviously doesn't need a team of all 5 Star recruits to win like Cal does. So just let the man do his job and see what happens

DJ was just a true anomaly.

He could jump REALLY high.

Most unranked guys don't have that intangible.

It's like finding an unranked football recruit that can run a 4.3 40.

I don't think you understand what irony is.

A poster used a DJ Stephens thread to make a negative comment regarding the level of player that Tubby recruits when DJ is one of the lowest ranked recruits we have ever taken and yet he turned into a fan favorite and is now making a good living as a professional basketball player.

That is irony and is not a diss on DJ at all. No reason for you or his "mom" to feel a need to defend him, he has not been slighted here. He is an example of a lower ranked player who panned out which makes it ironic that someone would use a thread about him to knock Tubby's recruiting.

It is sad that this has to be spelled out for you.

If D.J. had played for Tubby he would have left with a TREY and a 15 ft J and able to put the ball on the floor

I think you're making a joke, but anyway, DJ was 13-36 from 3 his senior year, which is pretty decent

RE: DJ Stephens is impressed ...
Pastner offered DJ only because he was in Tubby's current situation. If he had had time to be in on some recruits with numbers next to their names, he would never have given DJ the time of day.

On the other hand, Tubby has recruited numerous "unranked" players and taken them dancing. One of the biggest digs on Pastner was the inability to evaluate talent. Now, we have a coach who has proven for twenty years that he can do just that, but we don't like him, either.

That's about .3 makes a game.

His first four games he went 4-5. The rest of the season (30 games) he went 9-31.

Why try to argue him down? All averages have high and low points, but I said his average was pretty decent and it was. And I just went with his senior year because the sample size is decent.

I didn't say he was the best 3 point shooter ever, or the go to guy, our main 3 point threat, etc. But he developed of a 3 point shot to make defenses play him honestly, which helped him contribute to the team, and I think it's only right to give him credit.

I really don't understand trying to take away from him.

Good lord man.

Just noting that making 13 threes is a 36 game season is a small sample size, especially when 30% of all makes occurred in games 3 and 4 of the season.

Carry on.

Honestly they didn't guard DJ on the perimeter...

So he got open 3's and had to make 'em. If DJ was a serious threat from 3 Tarik would have been a beast his Junior year.
