Vitale and Decourcy on Memphis/Kentucky
I think it's also a great chance for Kentucky and Memphis to do something special. Why not have a home-and-home series in the near future? Kentucky coach John Calipari took Memphis to the national title game and was scheduled to be honored by the Tigers this summer before the ceremony was cancelled. Smith is in the UK Athletics Hall of Fame, but it is past time to hang a jersey with his name in the Rupp Arena rafters.
Kentucky fans gave Smith a huge ovation when he was introduced at Commonwealth Stadium during the Hall of Fame weekend. With Smith leading Memphis, I'm confident he would make sure Memphis fans treated Calipari with respect.
So could it happen?
"I think that would be a great gesture by both schools," Vitale said. "For Kentucky to play Memphis and pay tribute to Tubby for what he did while he was at UK would be awesome. I think Memphis would like to do it also if Kentucky would come to Memphis to play and for this, I think Kentucky should and maybe Cal would."
DeCourcy likes the idea, too.
"It's obvious from my interactions on Twitter that the people at Kentucky have come to appreciate what Tubby did well there. He is genuinely a terrific coach," DeCourcy said. "I wouldn't pretend his tenure at Kentucky was perfect, but it was overall a success."
Yes it was. You can't debate his resume. You can't question his character. You can't debate his success.
I'm pulling for him to succeed at Memphis just like he has everywhere else and also hoping both UK and Memphis will understand there is an opportunity to do something special now for both schools and both head coaches.

RE: Vitale and Decourcy on Memphis/Kentucky
The full paragraph:
Quote:National media analysts think hiring former UK coach Tubby Smith was a smart move by Memphis.
"Tubby Smith will do a great job at Memphis. He's a terrific fit there, and will win and win big. That's a home run get for Memphis," ESPN analyst Jay Bilas said.
"And for Tubby, it is a fantastic move due to the rich basketball tradition of Memphis. He's also in a conference he has a great chance to dominate," ESPN analyst Dick Vitale said.
This would seem a good time for UK to consider playing Memphis and perhaps putting Smith's jersey in the Rupp Arena rafters. He's already in the UK Athletics Hall of Fame but he deserves a jersey hung in his honor for winning a national title at UK.
"It would be wonderful for Kentucky to put Tubby in the rafters, and he's very deserving, in my judgment. Tubby Smith has won everywhere he's been, from Tulsa to Georgia to Kentucky to Minnesota to Texas Tech, and he'll win at Memphis. There's not a finer gentleman in sports than Tubby Smith," Bilas said.
Sporting News college basketball columnist Mike DeCourcy also thinks that would be a good idea.
"It's obvious from my interactions on Twitter that the people at Kentucky have come to appreciate what Tubby did well there. He is genuinely a terrific coach," DeCourcy said. "I wouldn't pretend his tenure at Kentucky was perfect, but it was overall a success."

Two threads, huh?
Well, we have about 15 front page threads on the Lawsons and Tubby's staff. So, why not have two threads for this??

We don't want any part of Kentucky next year, or for several years. Give Tubby a chance to build a team before you make him play a team like Kentucky.
As for a home game vs. Kentucky - no way do I want any part of that. The rain of "boo's" when Calipari comes on the floor will be embarrassing. The Tiger fans would get crucified by the press for that spectacle.

If Cal is pushing something, you know he has an agenda....do you think he might be recruiting the 2018/2019 classes in Memphis? An appearance here would help him further his cause. Plus, he knows his teams will be better than ours the next couple of years too...

Special for who? When we get a team again, sure, let's play. But right now you got a bunch of media types just trying to create a story.

Any opportunity you have to showcase your program and build some excitement you should jump on it. Great idea.

Have you seen how the UK crowd reacts to Pitino when the Cards visit Rupp Arena?
