Gallup: % Of Americans Who Identify As “Environmentalists” Down 36 Points since 91
[Image: frozen_gore.jpg]

Gee, I wonder why?

Quote:A Gallup poll released on Friday shows that the number of Americans who identify as environmentalists has dropped 36 points, from 78 percent in 1991 to 42 percent in 2016. There has also been a decline in Americans expressing concern about environmental problems, such as pollution.

The Earth Day poll is conducted annually by Gallup. The polling firm cites the politicization of environmental issues as one possible reason for the decline, highlighting the growing partisan gap in those who identify as environmentalists. […]

However, Gallup notes the “broader decline in personal environmentalism at the same time that the environment has turned into more of a Democratic than Republican issue,” citing the large decline in Democrats who consider themselves environmentalists — 56 percent today versus 78 percent 25 years ago.

Gallup also notes a decline in Americans’ concern over environmental problems, such as air pollution and pollution of rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Concern over polluted drinking water is down from 65 percent in 1989-1990 to 61 percent today.

The lack of concern goes away when people realize how much it costs. And how the rest of the world (China, Russia, India) just doesn't give a ****.

I'm more concerned with the poll which showed 51% of people 18-29 don't identify as capitalist. Of course I'm sure a lot of them cant define the term but I don't know if that should comfort me or not..

Maybe we need to rebrand capitalism... The liberals and socialist did a bang up job with "progressive"

I'm an environmentalist. A real one, not one of those loons that have hijacked another institution.

You nailed it. It depends on what your definition of "Environmentalist" is.

You certainly seem to ooze contempt for those you disagree with. It's interesting.

At any rate, I'm not any one thing, certainly not a capitalist nor a pure progressive. I consider myself liberal, but I have some issues on which I tend to be what I consider to be conservative -- self reliance when possible; support of a strong military and those who wear the uniform (I'm for a draft, but that's not a conservative trait); smarter government and where possible, less government, though I am fully supportive of social programs and do not mind paying taxes to help fund them.

I don't think capitalism is evil, but I don't like its excesses nor do I think letting it go unchecked is good for anybody. I basically doubt that capitalism alone will solve many of man's problems. But I could say that about any belief or system.

Where was the contempt?

1 - I am concerned that capitalism is now liked by a minority of young people
2 - Perhaps we should re-brand because progressive has helped displace liberal in US politics even though they are the same thing..

Remember 1988... That was the beginning of the end for "liberal" as a force in politics and its when"progressive" trended up. Same people, same beliefs, new name.

I admire how they did it.

This is where I lose it. I love nature, the Earth and clean air/water, but when 2/3 of the rest of the world doesn't give a crap about this kind of stuff, I find it futile to get too worked up about it. Are we supposed to invade China, India, Russia and many other developing countries just so that they confirm to "Environmental Policies" or whatever we want to call it?

Most of the checks people want to put on it actuall entrench already big corporate entities and lock out new entrants into the market. We don't practice capitalism in the country. We are way closer to mercantilism then Adam Smith defined capitalism.

But we let those polluting countries vote in the UN to put in climate change restraints on the US while they continue to pollute. How stupid are we?
