Raiders Stadium in Las Vegas and their plan to bid on College Events..
It appears the Oakland Raiders are on the verge of moving to Las Vegas...from the CBS Sports article and the plans for other use for the stadium:

As for the stadium, initial plans call for a 65,000-seat dome that could be built with a retractable roof at an extra cost of about $55 million, according to the latest cost model created by the Sands. The new stadium is tentatively planned to contain 100 luxury suites and 6,000 club seats.

If the stadium gets built, the Sands says the building could host events that Vegas doesn't currently have the infrastructure to handle, events like Wrestlemania, the Pac-12 Championship game, the College Football Playoff, the Final Four, the Democratic National Convention, the NFL Draft and possibly a Super Bowl.

I believe this is the proposed site. It's just off the Strip behind the MGM Grand. The site is owned by UNLV and is on the edge of their campus, not too far from the Thomas & Mack Center where they play basketball. Their current football stadium is all the way across town, so this would be a big development for UNLV football in addition to the NFL.

This would be terrible for UNLV football.

More competition for them. I agree, bad news indeed

They could host some P5 teams so that is a plus.
Depending on the design if say branding can change easily with digital signage. The lower bowl hold high twenties in capacity it could help.

A bigger stadium than they need although Sam Boyd also fits that description.

Unless it can magically shrink to a third of the size of an NFL stadium it will be terrible. They already have a terrible game day experience at the much smaller Sam Boyd.

As somebody who supports a school that shares facilities with a NFL team I can tell you it doesn't work out well for the school. Hell, ask Temple fans.

Bad for the NFL as well. Another small market without long ties to the franchise.

How soon until we hear about an NHL and NBA team in vegas now? Once the first domino falls, the rest will be right on its heels

The NHLexpansion team should be announced soon. The arena is complete.

No, the Raiders will be HUGE in Vegas. The Raiders have pretty much a national following and having a place like Vegas as a home city with easy flights from most of the country and an easy drive from SD, LA, NoCal...

It's a no brainer from their perspective IMHO.

Think about it if you're a Raider fan living in LA (there are a ton) you could buy season tickets and have eight Vegas weekends built around your favorite football team.

Yep, this is a can't fail move in that it's a franchise to both parts of California. If the Lakers moved to Vegas, that could work as well for basically the same reasons (many transplanted Angelinos already live in the Vegas Valley for starters).

UNLV football basically doesn't exist as it is and technically doesn't even play in Vegas. Other than the stadium capacity, this is nothing but good news for UNLV. And you can always tarp off the end zones and not sell tickets to the upper deck if you want.

LOL, They could use those Solar Road panels in the endzones to change team names without painting Them ! Heck You could cover the whole field with Them and change it up for Soccer & Baseball ! 03-lmfao This is Vegas, It needs to go above and Beyond any old stadium. The Future is here ! 04-cheers03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

If UNLV football generally had sellouts @home I would agree with you. But that is not the case. If they can have some winning season no reason they draw like SDSU does in an NFL Stadium.

The new stadium will be a dome with a retractable roof. That should help attendance.

How?

UNLV has been trying to get an on-campus/near campus stadium for years but haven't had any success in doing so.

UNLV Football stuck playing out in the middle of nowhere (far off the strip and far off campus) in the middle of the Nevada desert....

anything closer to campus would be a win-win for UNLV...especially if they get partners to help pay for most, if not all the cost.

Plus a Dome would open up a lot more events (i.e. $$$), let alone open up the chance of more start times in late Aug/Sept/Oct.

Yep...the 20,000 seat T-Mobile Arena (17,500 for hockey) opened just a few weeks ago...as Billionaire Bill Foley's bid to the NHL ($500 Million expansion fee plus already sold over 14,000 season tickets and ALL suites are sold out even before landing a professional team), is a strong one.
