Ip and Smith make the women's doubles tournament.
Ip will also be in the singles tournament.
Awesome! And correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like our biggest singles/doubles delegation at the NCAA tournament in quite a while.
Checking the
men's &
women's online history docs, I see that we've last had three NCAA tennis qualifiers in 2008 (Christoph Müller and Bruno Rosa in men's singles, and Ralph Knupfer & Christoph Müller in men's doubles).
In 2003, we had four NCAA qualifiers: Richard Barker, William Barker and Robert Searle in men's singles, and Richard & William Barker in men's doubles (#1 seed ).
We've also had three NCAA qualifiers in:
2004: Richard Barker and Robert Searle in men's singles, and Richard & William Barker in men's doubles (#1 seed ).
1986: Scott Melville in men's singles, Wendy Wood in women's singles, and Lori Cronk & Wendy Wood in women's doubles.
1985: Scott Melville in men's singles, Scott Melville & Andrew Taylor in men's doubles, and Wendy Wood in women's singles.
Of course, the current NCAA tournament structure is different from Rice's glory days of the 1930s -- NCAA singles champions in 1935 (Wilber Hess) and 1938 & 1939 (Frank Guernsey) -- and 1964-71, when the Owls has 13 All-Americans: Jim Parker-1964; John Pickens-1965/66; Mike Hamilton-1967; Butch Seewagen-1967/68; Mike Estep-1969/70/71; Zan Guerry-1969/70/71 and Harold Solomon-1971.
