BTW, for those who missed it-- FIU beat FAU last night, and their currently tied 3-3 going to the 8th inning. I had a feeling FAU was going to come down to earth, but didn't think they'd do so so quickly.

Offense a little better against a sub-par pitcher, but we continue to squander opportunity after opportunity. Efficient we are not. Great, great at bat by Dane Myers to work that leadoff walk (after fouling off 5 or 6 two-strike pitches) in the 8th inning, which turned out to be the winning run. He also scored the tying run.

Consequently, despite Chandler's first career bomb, I'd give my three game balls to Glenn Otto (W, 5-1, 2.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 HBP, 3 Ks), Dane Myers (1-2, 2 BBs, 2 runs) and Blake Fox (6.2 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 BBs, 4 Ks) in that order.

We face a hard throwing left-hander tomorrow, so I would expect both DiCaprio and Dunlap in the lineup. Any word on why Wunderlich was taken out suddenly?

Let's get it done tomorrow. Go Owls!

He ran into the wall trying to catch the USM HR.

Hopefully he is ok. That looked like it hurt.

Checking the Owls' schedule/results page:

April 9 ... UAB's 6-2 win in the middle game of that series.

Next before that was our 7-4 win over UH on March 22.

So 16 of the last 17 games we have given up less than four runs. Pretty amazing job by our pitching staff and defense. Even though our offense is really, really bad, we could go a long way if we keep this up.

We simply MUST do a better job at manufacturing runs. Our woeful bunting was on full display today, though it did result in the tying run.

Yea he didn't look like he felt great after it but like the radio guy said at least it's padded now. Busy day for the trainer as it looked like Hunter had a cut over his eye that was attended to early in the game.

That was a called hit and run.

And he had an ice pack or at least a wet towel on top of his head. My guess is that he got hit with the followthru on the swing (was a swinging K).

FIU does beat FAU 4-3 so FAU is now two games behind Rice and USM in the standings.

Only a hit and run because he didn't get a bunt down on the first 2 strikes. He pulled his bat back on both without even attempting to put the ball in play.

6th is correct. Largest crowd ever for non-SEC opponent.

Walt is correct. From the USM game story: "... the largest crowd to ever watch a conference game and sixth largest crown (sic) ever at Pete Taylor Park ..."

According to the USM Baseball Media Guide (p.22), here are the games at "The Pete" that had greater attendance:

1. 5,689 - Ole Miss 3/30/11
2. 5,658 - LSU 4/9/08
3. 5,377 - Ole Miss 4/5/05
4. 5,177 - Mississippi State 4/26/06
5. 5,132 - Ole Miss 4/11/07

followed by:

6. 4,770 - Mississippi State 4/25/06
7. 4,760 - Mississippi State 4/7/04
8. 4,705 - Ole Miss 4/22/09
9. 4,673 - Ole Miss 3/23/04
10. 4,601 - Baylor 6/1/03
11. 4,525 - Mississippi State 4/22/08
12. 4,464 - Mississippi State 4/23/08
13. 4,553 - Southern 5/30/03
14. 4,551 - Mississippi State 5/18/10
15. 4,526 - Ole Miss 5/14/13

(NOTE: The 2015 Media Guide is the most recent one available on the USM website.)

Diving attempt

OK. Thanks for the clarification.

They've had a really hard time tracking balls in the outfield. Looked like he should've made the catch down the LF line (it wasn't a line drive) but he dropped it after he had to dive for it.

That's because for some reason, we continue to DH natural outfielders like Slater and Keating while putting Scott (who converted to left late last season and is the slowest person on the team) and Gilbert (who is a third baseman) out in left. It defies logic and we deserved to get burned by it.

I think the double that you guys had on Friday night that led to your first run might have been caught with someone else in left.

Hopefully, Wunderlich is able to play today as he has been our most consistent hitter against southpaw pitching. Staab against a LHP is pretty much an automatic out.

On the positive side, we've got Salinas-Amador-Myers rested and ready, and I would imagine the Otto-man could be available for a one-inning save if necessary.

RE: Rice at USM Game 2
We made Aaron Fitt's Top 5 "thoughts" from Saturday's action...

http://www.d1baseball.com/analysis/tenthoughts042316/

Quote:4. Rice’s Ottomatic closer does it again
Sunday’s series finale in Hattiesburg is shaping up to be a good one. The first two games between Conference USA powers Rice and Southern Miss have been hard-fought one-run affairs, and the Owls evened the series up with a 4-3 win Saturday. Connor Teykl drove in Dane Myers for the tying run in the sixth, and then Tekyl drove in Myers again in the eighth to give the Owls the lead for good. And Rice closer Glenn Otto did the rest, working 2 1/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief to improve to 5-1 on the year. Otto struck out three and did not issue a walk, improving his ERA to 1.30 and his strikeout-walk mark to 51-11 in 41.2 innings this year. Otto was the closer on our midseason All-America team, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more valuable reliever in college baseball through 10 weeks this season.

Sunday’s winner will not only take the series, but it will move into sole possession of first place in Conference USA, because the two clubs are now both 13-4 in the league. Expect another great atmosphere for the rubber game after Saturday’s contest drew 4,950 fans — the sixth-largest crowd in the history of Pete Taylor Park.
