Gary Parrish Article - Josh could have been fired next mid season
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketba...at-memphis

Notice the sixth paragraph:

Sources have told CBS Sports that the Memphis administration pushed Pastner to aggressively pursue other jobs this offseason or risk a humiliating mid-season firing next season, at which point Pastner's career that took a hard turn for the worse over the past two years would be further, and possibly forever, damaged. So Pastner did as his bosses instructed. And after Georgia Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski was rejected by several candidates -- among them Valpo's Bryce Drew, who instead took the Vanderbilt job -- Pastner was able to secure a multiyear offer from Georgia Tech.

Could this be true? Opinions, please. Did the big time donors know of this? He still would have walked away with over $8 million left on his contract.

I am in no way in the know on such things...but it sounds true.
Think about it...Josh could have played hardball and made them pay him every dime of the $10.65 million they owed him. The message to him was...."if you MAKE us pay you this...understand that you will never be anything more than a college assistant ever again."

Josh at that point would be set for life wealthy....but could his ego handle being an assistant coach going forward?

If true, it saved the University over $9 MM. I think it was a win-win situation. Pastner is now head coach at an ACC school, and we are off the hook.

Agree about the win-win. No need to keep beating on Pastner. He tried as hard as he could while here.

Dr. Rudd and Tome Bowen handled that problem masterfully and I am grateful to Pastner for moving on.

Let's see. What could be happening sooner than mid-season that the school would want to happen before they did something potentially risky from a public perception standpoint ?

If we don't get into the Big 12 then I am going to do something potentially risky from a public perception standpoint.

Are you trolling or what?

This development, true or not, is strictly about the University of Memphis.

He's upset (sad, not happy in his vernacular) that his boy got shown das boot and had to find another gig.

Is this surprising in any way?

Again GP "breaks" a story a week after Josh leaves. With anonymous sources. Think about it, this would have been much more interesting story if GP would have reported it before Josh got the GTech job. Which GP knew nothing about until it was a done deal.

Oddly enough during the season, GP suggested that the administration should be doing this very thing.
