No controversy and no dilemma
Tubby is quoted here:

New University of Memphis head basketball coach Tubby Smith, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a University of Memphis baseball game Tuesday night at AutoZone Park, was asked if his new staff would include Keelon Lawson. In response, Smith said, "Yes. I think he deserves a spot."

A "spot" on the staff doesn't mean assistant coach.

Probably should read through the other thread ... plenty of discussion regarding this quote. Unfortunately, there is some controversy and apparently a dilemma.

It does, if he has a kid on the team.

And per rules he can't be reassigned for 1 more year.

Tubby's going to have to deal

He just lost am unranked juco PF to freaking Utah State.

Deal for what? One good year of Dedric and hoping that the other Lawson kid 3 years from now will be good enough. Basically the program is being held hostage for one good year from a kid where we'll be lucky to make the NIT.

It was always gonna be a long year irrespective of who is the coach next year.

I don't like the idea of the program being held hostage for basically what might amount to an NIT year even with Dedric.

We can agree to disagree.

Either way the program being held hostage especially at the stage it is in now for basically one sure fire year of a productive year from a kid doesn't make any sense to me.

RE: No controversy and no dilemma
The way Tubby is recruiting it doesn't matter if Dedric is here or not for next year.

They needed to hire a guy with a plan.

Beard walks into UALR and signs ten - TEN - players and goes 30-5.

Louisville's top to scorers were late period grad trans from freaking Drexel and Cleveland State!

In the modern era it's easier to restock and reload and win quickly if you have a plan.

I'm willing to let it play out. If we don't see improvement in year 2, then we have problems. I'm just glad we are past the Pastner era and I feel confident we'll rebound back in the next 2-3 years.

True, but Pastner either made, or signed on to the deal in the first place. So, it's apples and oranges.

I understand that. But, it's clear that Tubby wants to see if they can get a waiver from the NCAA. Pastner was going to try the same thing.

to be fair....Tubby is a much more accomplished coach. I can deal with the idea that the next 2 years are rebuilding seasons...as long as I see some sort of progress.
