Can see NDSU, Liberty and Northern Kentucky already lining up outside the MAC office.

They REALLY need to drop football and try to get into the MVC. If not there go for the A-10 with the Horizon as 3rd option.

MAC should not add any FCS teams. They should do replacement from CUSA or Sun Belt or simply add NMSU as a football affiliate if they can't get anyone from those conferences.

When I looked at the subsidies that a lot of lower G5 schools depend on it made me realize that without them, those programs wouldn't have football. Many of them are getting 60 to 80% in subsidy, while many of the elite are self sustaining with little to 0 in subsidy. Even Houston was at 58%. The highest P5 was Rutgers at around 30% subsidy I think, while the lowest G5, New Mexico, was around 25%. I see programs like NM St, EMU, Louisiana Monroe and EMU dropping FBS football programs within the next 5 years based on these unsustainable numbers. Maybe a few more. JMHO.
Cheers!

Curious, who makes sense from either conference other than Marshall? Would Marshall go back? NDSU probably best Geo Fit. Also, should have said EKU not NKU. Kentucy would not be a stretch for GEO fit and Liberty has the money that would make the MAC happy and no further than Marshall was. I don't get why some people are so anti-FCS. App St and Ga Southern has done well. I can see NDSU and Liberty doing far better in the MAC than Idaho or NMSU.

They shouldn't bring up more competition for recruits, coverage and fan support. Its also a bit of a drag on their image.

WKU would be a perfect fit as well as Marshall. ODU, MTSU, UNCC or Appalachian St. could work.

NKU does not have a football team. WKU makes sense. Good football and basketball. Not sure if there is much in it for WKU to leave C-USA though. The pay is basically the same, give or take a few tens of thousands of dollars a year.

None of those schools will ever join the MAC. NDSU is too far away from any MAC school. Liberty is basically the University of Phoenix Online East..... Pass. Northern Kentucky does not bring a new market for the conference or play football.

Thanks for trying though.

Really New Mexico State in the MAC? I've lost brain cells reading something so stupid as that.

RE: Could this be the next UAB?
No one in the Sun Belt would join the MAC as a solo entrant. First the MAC isn't going to add a full member that is that much of an outlier and second none of the Sun Belt members would be willing to be that far out of the regional footprint. If the MAC were going to 16 and there was a division with half the members in the south? Maybe. There are some schools royally pissed in the Sun Belt right now over the votes our rep made at the last NCAA meeting but don't see anyone so mad they raise their overhead that much going alone to the MAC.

As for CUSA, I think the MAC's shot at WKU has passed and it would make hundred miles of hate a non-conference game even if it continues, don't see Marshall thinking third time's the charm unless they were really really really unhappy with CUSA. After that you are talking ODU as the next reasonable option and while the AD there was the AD when WKU made overtures to the MAC again don't see that as likely. That takes you down to MTSU and they have a pretty nice location in CUSA East.

If that happened, I think that we might really find out if JMU was just against the Sun Belt or against FCS.

It would be as a football affiliate only, not a full membership. That can be doable.

I think the uninitiated are highly overestimating the chance the EMU drops football, is kicked out of hte MAC, or drops down to FCS.

We're talking about a school that draws less than 6K per football game. I cannot see how that is sustainable. Also, when you look at the basketball numbers (under 900 per game) it's not any better.

EMU does not look like they belong in FBS. But I guess that's for them to decide.

I don't think EMU has any business being in the MAC but i doubt they drop out. I think EMU realistic options would be the Horizon and drop football or keep football and go d2 and join the (GLIAC). Option 1 works for Oakland U, Option 2 works for Wayne state. Yet, EMU probably wants to stick with CMU and WMU but it really makes no sense. As for who would replace EMU in the MAC, either WKU or Marshall make the most sense but who knows if they would be interested. I guess UMAss could also be a target.

Depending on the timetable of EMU dropping football, would the MAC and UMass be open to reviving their football-only relationship to get back to 12, or are those bridges hopelessly burned?

In my opinion UMass lit the bridge on fire just like every other school that has used and abused the MAC over the years (UCF, Temple, and UMass) as a place to hang-out waiting for a more impressive prom date.

If EMU is no longer in the MAC there is probably a need to bring the conference back to 12. Who that would be is an interesting conversation. Many eastern fans prefer to head eastwards into markets like JMU or Stony Brook while some western fans prefer a more stable addition like an Illinois State or an NDSU.

Who knows? I think those that don't know history (UCF, Temple and UMass) are doomed to repeat it.

RE: Could this be the next UAB?
EMU isn't the only MAC school with issues about the financial viability of its football programs. So, just out of curiosity, I did some quick calculations using the last six years of Sagarin strength ratings to see what the MAC would look like if it lost EMU, Kent and Akron and replaced them with Marshall, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.

I was surprised at the results. That new conference's average strength rating would put them virtually on a par with both the AAC and MWC, generally considered the strongest G5s. It would expand the conference footprint slightly, but it would still remain the most geographically compact.

NIU would leave the MAC if they landed "a more impressive prom date" such as the AAC. Just like Temple did.

NMSU gives them an even 12. Odd numbers are a pain in scheduling as the MAC is well aware. I guess you've already lost too many brain cells to figure that out.04-cheers
NMSU was a full member of the MVC for a number of years.

I don't think this article implies that it is likely any time soon.

But its something that seems eventually inevitable. It may just take them another 20-30 years to cut their losses.

There's no way in hell EMU could hope to get into either the MVC or A10 if they had to leave the MAC because of dropping football. They'd most likely end up in the Summit or the Horizon if they got lucky.
