The analogy was pointing to your position in college football.

If you can throw a great convention, wouldn't there be a positive in getting your name out there to a lot of "customers" that would have never stepped foot into your 'business' without the 'expo' though? You take a short term loss while getting a large net positive in having your name scattershot throughout the regional business, increasing your visibility in the marketplace. No one can buy your stuff if they don't know who you are.

You pay coaches to make sure people know who you are. They have all year to visit HS coaches and admins. You make your program by hitting the road, not hoping to catch Big 10 rejects from a camp that you play second fiddle at.

So you invite other companies to your convention so they can compete with you for business?

Is ODU some mom and pop diner that no ones heard about? We have an athletic website that shows our facilities. If recruits can't turn on a computer and google FBS conferences, maybe college isn't for them.

How do you know all these kids are going to sing the praises of ODU? Our football facilities are meager. We share a Football Training Center with 2 women's programs and Foreman Field is not an adequate FBS stadium. The problem is there will be coaches from other schools who could impress them as well. Relying on word of mouth is not a great way to spread your brand.

I suppose now that the DOJ is involved. these camps will return. If ODU wants to hold a camp and invite other coaches, maybe it can charge them for advertising at our camp. That's what they're doing, they're going after our paying customers.

Plus the simple fact is that there aren't 1,000 legitimate football prospects in the market and surrounding areas, so a lot of those players coming are just space fillers to increase revenue. Virginia has produced around 55 FBS football signees per year for the last 6-7 years. That means that even if you have 7th through 12th grade at the camp, only 330 of those kids will get a FBS scholarship, and that's the maximum if every single good player, good now and in the future, shows up.

This is a really good article showing the effects of the satellite camp ban.

I wholeheartedly agree, Harry. The NCAA seems to have lost all focus on their core values and mission. Television and money are making a mockery of collegiate sports.
