EMU evaluating football program

This article says everything is being considered, including eliminating football or dropping to DII. Here's the discussion on EMU's board:

Not surprised, don't think they have much of a choice at this point .

I'd bet on ISU or NDSU replacing them if that ever happened

+1. I'd much rather keep EMU.

RE: EMU evaluating football program
No one's pulled the plug on this level of football since some California programs 25-30 years ago.

There was UAB but that was some political BS, as we know, and they're coming back. There have been Universities that have reviewed (UMass comes to mind), but they're still playing. It's not real until it's real.

If we had to deal with that ISU troll any more that would be the end of the world as we know it.

It's a guaranteed attendance bump for one game. They probably have a couple hundred thousand alumni in the area as well. That translates into hundreds of football attendees. Maybe a thousand!

I feel bad for EMU. With their location, it's just nearly impossible to compete for fans. I wouldn't be too surprised if a few schools consider dropping down or eliminating football relatively soon.

A Time-Warner program attacks a University, whose athletic programs are
tied to a contract with rival Disney's ESPN.

RE: EMU evaluating football program
I've read some of the comments posted here by folks who apparently are talking out of their ass again. Here's the official release from the University:

Statement from Board Chair Mike Morris

by Eastern Michigan University Regent Mike Morris, Published April 20, 2016

Bookmark and Share

While a review of budgets in all operating areas of the University is underway, there is no active plan among the Board of Regents to specifically evaluate football. On an overall level, the Board has high regard for our current football program, its outstanding coach and its success going forward. The opinions expressed by an individual Regent do not represent the position of the full Board. We expect to have a great season in 2016.

Mike Morris
Chairman, Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents

Here's my middle finger for those posting otherwise. No school in the MAC has won more MAC championships than EMU.

RE: EMU evaluating football program
EMU isnt going to to be the only MAC school or other conference school making cuts. Debt and lack of new revenue will make other schools cut some programs too. Some might cut football, some might cut others.

EMU's situation is sad. Not only do I wish they stay in the MAC, but I hope they prosper and enjoy some success.

EMU has a built in major disadvantage. Rynerson Stadium is 5-7 miles from the Big House. That will never go away. I just don't think you can overcome that. EMU has been good in minor sports but you have to compete in football and basketball. Many schools are struggling with attd, but I have been to EMU and counted the fans at the game and it was around 200. I had a ticket taker at EMU wearing a Michigan jacket.

As far as Ill St, they have to want to be D1 in football and it has been my understanding their eggs are in the basketball program. They don't want to make the financial commitment for D1 football. Now NDSU would be interesting.
