Men's Basketball BBQ This Evening
Reminder that this evening's soirée begins at 6 p.m. at the TED. Great opportunity to meet and greet the team and coaches and to discuss all things Monarch basketball. See you there!

I'm debating on whether I should go tonight or not. Me and a friend are gonna try and hit the Coaches Caravan next Tuesday at the Monarch Grille. But I don't really know that much about the Big Blue Barbeques.

Seems it's lost it's lustre. I remember when the Chesapeake Sheriff used to put it on years ago. Nice. Now it's in the big blue room, and nobody even knows it's on. talk about a steady decline in enthusiasm!! Used to have live bands, Fat Man broadcasting, BT's "bubbly" personality. Now you get the girly girl TA and Jeff "Zombie" Jones. WOW what a blast!!

Shame. The Big Blue BBQ was a highlight event for me every year when I lived down there. It has the potential to be awesome when done well. And it has been done well in the past. I didnt even know it was today.

I saw them setting up something outside the Webb around 5PM. No clue what it was for. Was this part of the BBQ?

Well you can certainly say that JJ is his own man. Seems to have no interest in selling the program to the community, can't wait to get away from any microphone and is so monotone and vanilla when not coaching.

He's selling steak, not the sizzle.

RE: Men's Basketball BBQ This Evening
I received numerous emails about it. The food was really good tonight. The same band, I think, that has performed the last 10 years or so....the Island Boys.

I don't mind it being inside except they need to lower the band volume since it was hard to converse! There were a few times in the recent years when it was held where the Practice Facility is being built that the weather was miserable. In that respect inside is ok except today was beautiful!

I've be going since the years it was held on the Bank of America Plaza downtown. It was great behind the TED and a few years it had to be moved into the Big Blue Room due to weather.

It was fun the year or two they held it in conjunction with the ONLY the Spring Game. That year that they added th 5K Run it was a disaster...long food lines, food running out, most of the runners could not have cared less about ODU BB, not enough seating. It was miserable and made me feel like BB was being marginalized...the red-haired step-child!

Awards (voted by the team)-
Best Practice Player- Martin Shaw
Most Improved (Cal Bowdler Award)- TIE- Brandan and Zoran
Best Defensive Player- Jordan
Paul Webb Award- (Best Represents ODU-On Court, In the Community and in the Classroom)- TIE- Aaron and Trey

JJ talked about the upcoming trips-
August to Spain- ODU will play four games total in Barcelona and Madrid. The most advantageous thing about going on these foreign trips
is the ten extra practice days.

A picture of the entire team was available and the players were very willing to sign them. All the kids were approachable and friendly. Trey actually did butt bumps with me to a good song as we were leaving. The ol' girl still has the moves!

They had a cornhole board set up and the players were tossing a few bags with the fans. On the big screens there was a running loop of highlights include Nik's "boom boom".

All and all a nice evening for $25 worth of food, beer, wine and fun.

Frances, you hit a home run. Thanks for the reporting!

I purposely waited to add my 'two cents' which is that you only get out of something that which you put into it. I'm proud of our guys and our coaching staff. I enjoyed the evening!

RE: Men's Basketball BBQ This Evening
Wish I had known about it. I get my tickets through a friend now so I guess I'm not on a list anymore. Didn't see anything or missed it if it was in ODU basketball. Was there any recruiting news at all? Did you guys talk to the coaches at all? Any word in what Trey is hearing from teams? What is Bacote planning to do. This is the one event where you can talk to everybody. Used to get all kinds of recruiting news at the BBQ.

I went to all these, way back to when Oliver Purnell started them back near the field house area, then out to Chesapeake at the picnic grounds during Oliver's, then Capels time. Oh well. Any more reports would be appreciated.

Not sure about the rest of yall, but I got email blasts a few times a week since Vegas. If you're a season ticket holder, I can't imagine why you would have missed the messages.

We talked to Aaron and he said he plans to play overseas next year. He has no idea where, yet, and is still working on getting representation, but is very excited about it.

There was plenty of publicity about the event, it was a LOT of fun, and Jeff Jones was great, not to mention all of the rest of his staff and the individual players. I was exhausted after a busy day at work, but I'm glad I went. I disagree with those who say that this event has lost its luster. It had to be moved indoors because the practice facility is being built. The band was really good; it was fun watching Ahmed Caver and B.J. Stith dancing to my generation's music (70s)!

I dropped my season tickets for hoops when I moved, but I received no emails about it. Also saw nothing on social media, no postcard in the mail either. Oh well, I couldn't have made it anyway. Glad its still going strong. How was attendance? Any scoops? Couldn't they have it on Kaufman Mall or the parking lot by the current practice facility, or behind the dorms on the river? All good spots it would seem.

Please don't get me wrong. I wasn't blaming anyone but myself. I saw the emails, but I simply forgot to put it on my calendar.

Recruiting news is more for the Coaches Caravans. The BBQ is supposed to be a celebration of the current years team.

RE: Men's Basketball BBQ This Evening
Monarx, some of us also talked last night about how it would be nice to move the location of the BBQ to the parking lot next to Foreman Field, or even in the covered "beer area" of the gameday building, since the lot behind the Ted is no longer an option.

Coach Jones was very happy to be there and he especially noted so since he was unable to attend last year's BBQ because of his surgery.

The players were having a blast last night celebrating with the fans. Sorry that some of you did not hear about it. ODAF sent several emails about it to members and it was publicized on Athletics' website.

Yeah, I got a bunch of emails about it. Decided against going since I'll be going to the Coaches Caravan.
