RE: Spring Sports
They really ought to just rename the tennis trophies the ETSU trophy. Frustrating day however for women's golf, but they still came in third. Softball is still hanging around in a three way tie for second and is hovering just above .500. Can anyone enlighten us on why they've played 20 less games than their conference counterparts? Kind of odd, but I guess it's working since they're still above .500.
Baseball is atrocious. 3-9/16-24. All I ever heard when i was there was how much better they'd be if they had their own stadium. Well shoot ladies and gentlemen, they've got a damn nice facility and they're worse now than they've ever been.
But to keep it positive, really happy for Yaser and his bunch. You have to work pretty hard not to like him.

RE: Spring Sports
Men get Michigan; women get UNC:

NCAA tennis draws

That's almost certainly a death sentence for the women, as expected - but this is one of the steps ya gotta take along the way. May 13th in Chapel Hill.

Michigan is 'only' ranked 24th, so this is a very reasonable draw. Nothing I see breaks down each region into seeds, but it looks like we did get a 3 seed in the region as we had hoped. Michigan has been in rebuilding mode, but finished 3rd in a tough, strong, competitive Big 10. They won 3 first sets in singles off of Ohio St. (a team ETSU is all too familiar with in the NCAAs) in the Big 10 semis, so that speaks well of them. Michigan beat Washington in Ann Arbor 5-2; ETSU lost to Washington in Seattle 5-2. I think that's our only common opponent.

Coastal Carolina plays Wake in the other bracket, and Wake is 6th-ranked. The match will be at Wake's courts in Winston-Salem the 13th, so let's get a huge caravan going over, ok?

What a freaking incredible comeback on 2. Down 5-0, they won first set 7-5!
Other two are dogfights, too.

RE: Spring Sports
Dang. Won the one it looked like we were getting killed in, and lost the other two 7-5 and 7-5. The margins of victory vs. defeat are so tiny at this level.....

So.....for those of you not hep to how this is scored, the overall doubles counts 1 point, so Michigan is up 1-0, and ETSU will have to win 4 out of the 6 singles matches to win the overall match.
Gosh that could have gone the other way....

Singles are all dogfights also.

We've won 3 first sets; they've won 2; 1 undecided.

Suddenly looking grim....
Diego Nunez has lost at 3. We'll have to win 4 out of the remaining 5. Ain't gonna happen, I'm guessing. Michigan is good.

Well, I mean it *could* happen. We've now won 4 first sets, but Rogerio is now down in his second set after winning the first.

RE: Spring Sports
Softball lost an elimination game to Chattanooga today, 6-3. Gave up 3 runs in the top of the 7th. They finish 20-22, by far their best season under Irwin, and losing six games to weather in early April probably kept them from the program's first winning season since 2003.

Baseball also lost its conference winning streak last night - a four-run Wofford rally in the ninth led the Terriers to a walk-off win. The Bucs need to bounce back and win the last two games of the set for a chance to finish at or above .500 before the conference tournament.

Biosca closed out his win at #1, 7-5, 6-4.
But Rogerio lost his second to split. As did Yllera at #5.

Yaser is as nervous as the proverbial long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Michigan 2, ETSU 1.

Herrera wins at #4, 6-4 in the 3rd, but momentum seems to have swung back to the Wolverines in the others.

Michigan 2, ETSU 2.

Regerio wins at #2, 6-2 in the 3rd!
But we're on the ropes in the last two singes matches. In both, Michigan is up late in the 3rd.

It's over: Michigan 4-3. They closed out the matches on #5 and 6 6-3 and 7-5 respectively. Dang. So close.

Once again, losing the doubles point comes back to bite us, as it has so many times in the past.

But congratulations again to Yaser and the team on *another* great season.

And of course, as expected, the women got crushed by UNC, but Melissa Esguerra did at least take a set at #5:

Too big a task

UNC's version:

just another day on the courts...

Congratulations to Travis and the team on another great season!

Very, very early in the first round, ETSU's golf team is tied for 8th in WI. Meronk was 2-over after 3; now just 1-over. I don't expect us to do particularly well on this beautiful but really difficult course.

RE: Spring Sports
Dang - faded down the stretch to end up 7-over in 11th place. Still plenty of time to recover.

Meronk had a bizarre round. He double-bogeyed the first hole, and *tripled* the penultimate hole, yet still managed to come in only 1-over. Kristjansson started out great, being 2-under at the turn (they started on the back nine), but bogeyed 5 out of the last 8 holes to finish +4. Cayman Ratliff also struggled on the front nine, going 4-over to finish +5. (That front nine must be a beast.)

Florida, Idaho, and Florida St. have a small gap on the field. Two Idaho guys are tied at #1 with a Fla. St. guy and a Jackrabbit!*

*South Dakota St., for those of you who've already forgotten them from March Madness, or didn't otherwise know.

RE: Spring Sports
Not looking good for getting to that all-important 5th place....

We're +2 on the day, now in 9th place, 12 strokes out of 5th, at about the halfway point on the day (and of the tournament). Florida currently has a 5-stroke lead on the field.

Meronk (again starting on the back nine) turned the corner at +2 on the day, dropping him way down the individual list. I was hoping at least he'd qualify for the nationals, but that's looking quite grim at the moment. On the other hand, Kristjansson is -1 on the day, and has risen to tied for 16th.
