College Sports Camps
Do on campus camps really matter? We have been without men's basketball camps at JMU for 8 years. How many potential recruits might it have cost us?

Quote from P.K. Kier in today's DNR:

The connection to JMU for Kier goes back to the seventh grade, when he went to overnight football camp, he said. From the eighth grade to his junior year, he attended the one day camps at Madison, he said.

Almost as important is the young fans it has cost JMU. The camps create engagement between the team/coaches and kids as well as a chance to be on campus and feel apart of the university in some respect. Having camps will not solve attendance problems but I have to think it will at least help a small amount.

You are correct, it is marketing. It costs JMU very little. It can make the coaches a little cash. There is little to lose, but the HC has to "buy-in" or it will not be good for anyone. He can easily view the time spent a lost time recruiting.

Personally, if JB believes in it, then during the interview process he should uncover this type commitment and hire appropriately. Let it be known that I liked MB, but once again we have found JMU at fault for not doing its due diligence (or JB didn't care enough about having a MBB camp).

The first strike was the legal fiasco with Marist. Again, defend JB all you guys want, but anyone, and I mean anyone with his background, should have seen and raised a red flag before hiring Matt. That didn't take some legal mind to see there were going to be some issues that needed to be cleared prior to Matt coming to JMU.

Agree 100%......camps 'should' be a key component to the overall athletic picture. They are typically mainly run by assistants and are great for earning some extra $$$$, while at the same time creating connections and community involvement.

Great marketing, good for future recruiting, a little extra cash... I think it would be awesome for every sport at JMU to have it's own summer camps, even if it's only for day or two. Even for the smaller sports it would be another thing to help get the local community behind the university. Just have a week during the summer where every sport has a 'Duke for a Day'.

Not sure if JMU has the correct facilities for sport day camps. 05-stirthepot04-cheers

Kenny used the basketball courts in the old UREC. I imagine with the new facilities, there will be more court options.
