Been looking for something official, and all I found was this fire marshall report. It says there were smoke detectors.

Two straight years that a former basketball player has died tragically in April.

Is a blood toxicology study automatic in such deaths? There may be a reason for the circumstances of the fire based upon its cause and that the victim was unable to respond in time to save his life. Inoperable smoke detectors contributed as do unused seat belts in so many fatal auto accidents.

You'd be shocked at just how fast smoke inhalation can take down even a big healthy young man. Hit the floor, low crawl out, leave all possessions behind.

So true!! Short story, years ago, I was working on my 77 Corvette inside my garage. Had a electrical fire under the hood. Grabbed fire extinguisher, popped open the hood and got hit in the face with pillar of black smoke which I inadvertently breathed in. I immediately hit the floor like a sack of potatoes. My brother, grabbed the fire extinguisher, put out the fire. I was incapacitated, he pulled me out of the garage into open air. Called 911. By the time the paramedics arrived I was able to breathe on my own. 1-2 minutes of that kind of smoke, I would have been unconscious. I was helpless after 2-3 seconds.

Ended up redoing the entire engine compartment
