SOT: Coaching Styles and Golf
As an avid golfer I find it interesting comparing coaching styles of two particular coaches, albeit different college sports. One has won 5 national championships while the other cannot claim as much success.
Nick Saban, of the perennial power Alabama, talks about golf and the challenges it presents as a "metaphor of life". Great shots do not always guarantee great finishes where bad shots do eliminate the possibility of recovering. Not the article discussing how he equates it to football, but I'm guessing that somehow he does.
On the other hand Josh Pastner refuses to hire an assistant coach who plays golf. Pastner's reasoning is that golf takes too much time needed to focus on their jobs. It is an interesting take on it but it could eliminate a very good assistant coach while keeping to his principles.

That might explain a little of the recent frustration of Memphis fans.

Booby Knight used to fly fish a lot. That could take up all your time if you let it. Trust me on that one.
I think Knight played golf too.
I think something like golf lets you de-compress. Maybe that is was Pastner needs.

Pastners problem is he never worked his way up. His dad got him the job with Olsen. He doesn't command respect from his players. His only qualification is recruiting connection s.
