RE: Vancouver BC paper reporting that Simon Fraser will likely move to DI in hockey.
This may or may not be a silly question, but - do Simon Fraser and the Alaska schools provide a travel subsidy for hockey?

The Alaska schools do provide subsidies for the WCHA schools to come out there. Used to be Alaska Anchorage paid for fares for a certain number from each visiting conference team and UAF provided something similar to CCHA schools. The WCHA and CCHA didn't want both teams, but could handle one each for the betterment of hockey. With the Alaska exemption, visiting schools also get two extra games to schedule, so they benefit that way too. Now with most WCHA schools playing four games in Alaska, they don't get four extra games, only two. Most of the WCHA teams now get paid to visit the B1G for the extra games.
Simon Fraser now plays club hockey in a BC university league, so they don't pay now. Would depend on what the WCHA negotiates. Travel to BC is looked at as beneficial for recruiting, so I wouldn't think WCHA schools would frown on it as much as Alaska travel. When UND played in Anchorage, one had to stay up very late to catch a telecast or radio feed, so that was a big negative. We've actually played Simon Fraser in an exhibition in Vancouver, which is almost unheard of in the sport. But the Vancouver area has very good recruiting. Winnipeg does too, but we play another US team there, not an exhibition game.
With a western division, each school would play 12 games within the division. That leave 16 against other WCHA teams, which is perfect as their are 8 other schools and they each play two games against the same school on weekends. The rest of the WCHA would have one trip to Alaska each year and one to Vancouver or Phoenix. That is much better than two trips to Alaska and Simon Fraser and Ariz St wouldnt find those Alaska trips nearly so taxing.. The NCAA rules doesn't normally allow a school to stay in Alaska for two weekends, so two trips are necessary.

Arizona Coyotes are supposed to have an arena announcement today - if in Central Phoenix/Tempe/Rez, would be new home for ASU as well.
