I totally disagree.

I was there during 84-88....and saw some really good football.
I got to see Eddie Robinson coach his Grambling team in Jonesboro. We also made it to the 1-AA finals against some team....can't remember who, but we lost.
Saw us whip Memphis St with a backup QB. As always, that was supposed to be 'their year'.

Let's face it. The 1-AA playoffs will remain a much better format than the handful of teams they pit together in 1-A. That format eliminates the Cinderellas and that's the most fun of the basketball tourneys.

Basketball was more fun in the late 80s. stAte was actually good, and beating good teams. Nationally relevant. On the bubble/NITs.

I remember the pathetic crowd at one of those home football playoff games, and then having to go get beat in some snowstorm on the road somewhere way off. How is that a level playing field? Big meh . . .

The same team who won the last 3 years before that, NDSU

97-02 at State. It was the first time athletics had been taken seriously at State. We hired Lefty. Beat Georgia twice in basketball including once in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. Beat Wisconsin for our first ever NCAA tourney win and made the NIT as well. A pretty cool time to be a GSU student.

RE: Recalling Your SBC Team's Seasons As a Student
I was a student during the major push for a football team that started in 2006/07. My name was on the student petition for football that was delivered to (then) President Moulton at halftime of one of our basketball games. The scroll was about 15 feet long and had somewhere around 2000 names within a week.

I remember waiting for the results of the Board of Trustees meeting with a group of students in the student center when they announced a unanimous decision in favor of the program. I remember sitting in the student section of the first game and every game that year. It was truly a special time for USA.

I also remember the basketball regionals and watching David Freese during my times there.

1999 - We went 13-2, losses to App & Oregon St (coached by Dennis Erickson)
We destroyed Youngstown St (lead by Jim Tressel) 59-24 on a cold rainy night in Chattanooga, TN to win our 5th National Championship, got to witness AP's The Run from the corner of the player's box w/ Coach Ivin Jasper (Navy's OC)
Co-SoCon Champs

2000 - We also went 13-2, losses to UGA & Furman
We had jumped out to a good lead vs. Montana in the National Championship game, another cold rainy night in Chattanooga, TN, Montana came storming back & took the lead until the next play from scrimmage, where AP broke the Son of the Run put us back in the lead for the remainder of the game. 28-26, for our 6th National Championship
SoCon Champs

2001 - We went 12-2, losses to ETSU & Furman
We blew a halftime lead against Furman, & in the semifinals, this was our 1st home play-off loss in history
Johnson was rumored to had already accepted the Navy HC position the week prior to the Furman semi-final game
SoCon Champs

2002 - We went 11-3, losses to Western Kentucky, Delaware & Wofford
SoCon Champs
Again loss to WKU in a home semifinal game, in a nail bitter of a game
Mike Sewak's 1st season as a HC

2003 - The only year, while I was in school, where we didn't win the SoCon or make the playoffs

I had a blast working w/ the team & traveling w/ the team over those 5 seasons. So much so it is still hard to this day being a season ticket holder & having to watch the games from the stands.

Very similar for me ... 96 - 01 ... the PJ years. Went to NC games in 98, 99, 00 and deep playoff games in 97, 01. Was there when we tore down our own goalposts by clenching conference title at home and then when we quit tearing them down as we were more interested in tearing them down in Chattanooga.

I transferred to App State in 2013 so I was there to witness the miserable 2 year transition.

4-8 in 2013
7-5 in 2014. Started out as miserable as 2013 but rattled off 6 straight wins to finish things off.

RE: Recalling Your SBC Team's Seasons As a Student
App had 4 declining seasons while I was in school, 2009-2013.

Coming in as a Freshman was extremely exciting for as we nearly pulled off a come from behind win at ECU once we placed our 3rd string QB (RB Travaris Cadet) in the game coming out of the half. During that season we went on to crush Southern at home 52-16. I distinctly remember thinking "This is the big "rival" everyone talked about?" We ended up finishing that campaign with a heartbreaking goal line drop by Brian Quick in the national semifinals at Montana. I'm still very grateful that I was able to watch Armanti play in person, he really was amazing.

Each successive season saw us exit the playoffs a round earlier, falling to Nova in 2010 and Maine in 2011. My roommate and I made it to every game of the 2011 season so I would have to say that I had the most fun that year, even though it was not our best season while I was a student.

Since graduating I've been able to start my career in Boone so I haven't missed a home game since the first time I walked into the Rock to see us fall to McNeese St. in 2009. 2015 was easily our best year since 2007 and I'm hoping 2016 can surpass it!

But my enjoyment of stAte football doesn't hinge on how others take notice of us. Never has, never will.

The highest of highs and the lowest of lows.... #4 in the nation, on the cover of SI as the team with the best chance to tumble the UCLA dynasty... then the death penalty, unjust and unprecedented.... 1973, the year that shall live in infamy.

Kinda feel pity for those who think any other way. I dare say the current atmosphere at NDSU is head and shoulders above 90% in the FBS. The campus is rocking I can assure you despite only their knowing. Fun times indeed.

GSU '91-'98 (yeah, yeah)
Panthers had their first Tournament appearance the Spring before I arrived, a blow-out loss to Arkansas.
Very little on the greatness-odometer as I can recollect. I had an Australian cross-country runner in a couple of my classes who made some noise; competed internationally. Sadly I can't find any info on the web since they killed the program.
The most memorable sporting event was watching a fraternity brother hit a half court shot for free tuition at half time of a basketball game...and dominating the Fraternity intramural football playoff and championship in '95ish. Not drinking between games proved to be a masterful strategy. Literally all I got.

Hell, I went to Southern because I thought I-AA was great. Unfortunately my time in Statesboro coincided with that of Tim Stowers, who was nice guy but not a great head football coach.

I-AA was excellent. So was FCS. I'm OK with FBS, but to be honest kinda miss the way it was.

Freshman Year: End of the Jerry Moore era; announced that App would be moving to FBS/SBC (my first App game was beating Montana)
Sophomore Year: Bad football; Satterfield's first year as HC
Junior Year: First year as a member of SBC; great second half of the season
Senior Year: Successful football season topped off with a Camellia Bowl victory (went to every home game, Clemson, and the Camellia Bowl)

Freshman Year (02): I was in the band. We were almost the only ones in the stands. We stunk...alot.
Sophomore Year ('03): Shark in the water defense! Triple Shoot Offense! Mat-suckass in his only season in San Marvelous.
Junior Year ('04):
Senior Year ('05): Bailiff gets the 'Cats to the FCS playoffs, where we hosted two nationally-televised playoff games in a sold out stadium. Pretty awesome. Our run ended with "the knee."

Then the suckage began.
-Bailiff leaves us for Rice.
-We hire a HS coach, experience mediocrity until we reach FBS.
-We hire a guy who should have retired 10 years ago.
-Several seasons later: We still are mediocre (AT BEST) and have no bowl appearances.

It's tough being a Bobcat. 03-banghead04-cheers

I was an undergrad and grad student in the mid 80's into the early 90's and have wonderful memories about the Sun Belt Conference during it's basketball heydays. Top 20 rankings for both sports and lots of post season successes for multiple schools. Several great memories of games with USA. I really miss the USA rivalry and it's fans. Best memories were of watching WKU vs #1 ranked UNLV in Madison Square Garden for the Pre-Season NIT Championship. We lost in double overtime but man what a season. Also watching our Lady Toppers in the three Final Fours was great and was in person when we played in the Final Four in Rupp Arena.

I was at ULM...then NLU...from 1973-74 as a D-II school (not the same as today's D-II) and from 1975-77 as a D-I. Four losing seasons of football (but the best marching band in the country at that time!) but there were highlights and lowlights:

- 21-21 tie at Mississippi State
- 14-8 win over #20 Richmond who was D-I at the time, our first victory over a nationally ranked top division team
- A 14-game losing streak that was worst in the nation in 1976-77
- The go-ahead in 1976 to build Malone Stadium (finished in '78)
- 14-10 win over Louisville
- A loss to West Texas in a blizzard in Amarillo. We wore all-white and couldn't see each other in the snow!

That's about it. Everything else was lowlights back then but it was still a fun time to experience football without all the dumb stuff going on now.
