OT: Gator Loose on UL Campus
For those that might not be aware, UL has a beautiful and totally unique feature in the middle of its campus: Cypress Lake. Among the wildlife that live in it, there are a few alligators.

Being wild creatures, these gators do not always stay where we want them to, lol. Today one got out and decided to stroll amongst the new terraces of the student union, which borders and surrounds a good bit of the lake.

The following pics that captured the event were posted in the 'Vermilion' (aka, the Verm.)

You guys don't need wildlife management to come out there and control it, just bring in Mark Hudspeth, I'm sure the gator will never come near the campus again after Hudspeth is done with it.

RE: OT: Gator Loose on UL Campus
They are a common occurrence in Cypress Lake (the small 2 acre swampland in the photo) located just behind the student union in the heart of campus. From my student days long ago I seem to remember they like Cheetos. When one get too large they move them to a larger swamp area along the cost.

It was humorous that they tried to put a mating pair of swans in the lake. They were beautiful to look at swimming around. After a while, one went missing. You can guess the results. I guess alligators like swans as well.

If Hudspeth is everything he puts his image out there to be, he should wrestle that gator.

We had a couple of gators on our campus a couple years ago. Always neat seeing them in the wild.

Geese may look friendly, but they are not to be messed with.

Here's a pic of Cypress Lake and a link to a brief history of it.

I use to work at a resort that had swans. They looks so majestic and lovely, but the groundskeeper said they're feisty creatures, especially during mating season. Their wingbone can break a human leg with a solid smack.

How is this news? Aren't those things like "pets" in Louisiana?

The only thing that I could readily discern from the pics, would be violation of the local leash laws . . .

Carry on . . .

Perhaps it was just a student interested in enrolling.

I'm sure it could be arranged that the alligator passes his ACT...the Cajuns know a guy.

RE: OT: Gator Loose on UL Campus
Haha awesome! USA has a swamp on campus and there have definitely been gators on campus. One time I was hiking the trails with a friend from outside the area. When we approached the swamp there was a sign warning people to watch for alligators. He took a picture of it and thought it was a funny joke. It isn't a joke but unfortunately we didn't see a gator... However, one night I was eating dinner on the Causeway with Atlanta Trojan and we saw a gator through the window. The funny thing is I had just told him that a gator was spotted on campus that same day. If you don't have gators where you live then you're missing out!

On a side note I love marshes and swamps. I think they are visually appealing and I like how each marsh and swamp is unique. Cypress Lake looks really nice (and looks pretty shallow; any deep parts?)... you guys have more pics of it? I like the moss hanging from the trees. Here are a few pictures of USA's swamp... Lots of lily pads in the spring/summer.

Is that swamp really on your campus?

Yeah, I have a few good pics of Cypress Lake that I can share tomorrow. For now, I have one from google earth that will give you a good idea of how it is located in the middle of our main campus. It is located right below Hebrard Blvd, and the building wrapped around it at the bottom is the new "U" where our friend as strolling around today.

Yeah. USA has a lot of land, and we have trails to the north of the main part of campus (highlighted in red). In the same area is the swamp land (highlighted in blue), which are tributaries of Three Mile Creek. For a size reference, the Mitchell Center is in yellow.

Georgia Southern was built on top of marsh land and has done a really great job of preserving the nature around campus. There's a large nature preserve by sweetheart circle, a wildlife center, nature trails, and a botanical garden. When the campus expands and South Campus is built they'll have even more marsh land to build around.

unforunately its hard to find pictures of the swamps/lakes on campus because a google search for "Georgia Southern swamp" just comes up with pics of our win at UF.

I am always apprehensive when I bring a young retreiver on his first goose hunt....it can get ugly
